The west should not get involved! If there is a problem in Syria, it must be solved by Syrians. France, Russia, US, UK, China need to remember this. Superpowers should not use Syria as a proxy war, they should use their role to be peacemakers and to let the people of Syria decide their future.

Thats true, but your statement is about 2 years too late  , now we should try to solve the conflict instead

Than I suggest "we" leave this one to the "East" to resolve it. Just out of curiosity, for a "test", to see if the final result will be any different than in the countries that have had their conflicts resolved by the "West". 8_

True, but would it be fair to use the Syrians as test pawn? :-)
Well, there are multiply options to solve this conflict ultimatley it boils down to the sides wanting to talk to eachother or one is defeated militarily.

Just in case you didn't get it, I was being sarcastic.

Neither should Russia or Iran for that matter. The majority of people in Syria have decided against Assad, he is not willing to let go of power. Sometimes the West isnt the big bad evil corporate bad guy that everyone thinks it is.

Indeed, the foreigners should not be involved. Neither the west or Russia, Iran, China should be arming Syrians. By arming Assad, or the Islamist terrorists will only make fighting worse for the actualy people! Instead of arming these people, they should be funding negotiations. By the way, when I said 'superpowers' I don't just mean the west, but it also means the other greedy lot, Russia and China. You think that the west is not that bad? Because, you know that if they send their troops to Syria, it won't be to liberate the Syrian people, it will be another Iraq. Why does the USA care so much about Syria? What business do they have there? Did somebody mention oil?

Russia has a monopoly for supplying natural gas to Europe.
Qatar wants to build a new natgas pipeline to Europe, through Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Syria is in the way. Being a friend of the Russians, Assad said "No, you can't build your pipeline through my country and break Russia's natgas monopoly."
Qatar and Saudi Arabia got upset and conspired with the US to overthrow Assad.

This benefits the US in a number of ways:
1. Remove a regime hostile to Israeli interests.
2. Remove a regime that is an ally of Iran, further isolating America's main adversary in the region.
3. Remove an ally of Russia, by far our biggest global political rival.
4. Continue the momentum of the Arab Spring.
5. Maintain the Petrodollar. One of the implied conditions of Saudi Arabia sticking to the USD for oil exports is that the US leverages it's superpower status to serve Saudi interests in the region. If we can't live up to our obligations —and with Putin checkmating Obama on the whole chemical weapons/US invasion thing, this is now a proven fact — it can and will undermine our status as global reserve currency, which is the crutch on which the US's high standard of living rests.

Removing a regime hostile to Israel? Of course the Americans don't want to lose their puppet state! Awww, poor poor Americans! Don't want to lose moneys :(((((( You want to remove Assad because he is hostile to Israel and you want to replace Assad with a group of Islamist terrorists who are even more hostile to Israel! Makes no sence.

Russia's greed is as bad as the Americans! Shame in superpowers! Should be using their powerful positions for peace, not war!

Noble points out very well the American point of view :). Think the American Gov thought that the actual Al-Qaeda allies wouldn't get that strong. Also Qatar is competing with the saudis for influence among the rebel groups, and as such has atleast partly financed Islamists. Think this conflict have blown up in Obama et al's faces, they probably didn't think the Syrian gov would get that much support of Russia and Iran and manage to stay in power. Thats politically, militarily the situation is different, with some infighting between some rebel groups, so if they where to win Al-Assad militarily, then a second phase of the Civil War would ensue and the conflict might end up as Afghanistan. Remember what happined when Russia decided it was to expensive to continue the war in Afghanistan, the gov fell, then previously unified rebels splintered and started a Civil War that lasted until the Radical winners(or dominant) group decided to support Al-Qaeda and the US invaded. In the end, the move became one of the major reasons for the dire debt the US has gotten it into right now and encourage the the US to make a coalition of a handfull of nations to invade Iraq. The end has to be negotiated to avoid future bloodshed, because Al-Assad would most likely take reprisals.

I'm just explaining the thought process of our senior leadership. That doesn't mean I agree with it. Personally, I think the US has utterly wasted the advantages of world reserve currency status + military hegemony. Instead of making smart investments to keep our economy productive and push the boundaries of technology (space exploration, thorium nuclear plants, transportation infrastructure, etc...) we instead subsidized wasteful consumer spending (big houses, car loans, massively overpriced universities) and used our giant sledgehammer of a military anywhere and everywhere without much thought behind it. The US military should have been cut to the bone after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Instead we've gotten ourselves trapped in a Catch-22. Our global military presence supports our Petrodollar. But it pisses people off, so they try to abandon it. Our only response is to.....use our global military presence to force compliance. Needless to say this is unsustainable in the long run.

Why does everyone believe that we care only for Oil?

The only country we have been at war with that actually had significant amounts of Oil is Iraq, Libya has about the same amount of production as South Dakota...

A brief history of our military engagements:
Libya (no troops, and in reality, Britian and France handled most of the air support, US provided general support aircraft, communications, logisitcs, etc)
Iraq
Afghanistan (actually has the largest reserves of Iron ore now, along with other minerals, in the trillions of dollars possibly)
Iraq
Bosnia (It's in Europe, and the only reason we got involved was because the EU can't actually solve anything itself, even if you look at the Libya campaign)
Somalia
Korea
Vietnam

Nearly all of these military campaigns had UN approval or were UN missions.

And even if people are switching from the US dollar to use something else as a global currency, the only thing they could choose is the Euro... which is what the USA helped setup and create.

You make the world seem as if its a small little box and not complicated at all, but it isn't. Everything that happens in the world affects every other nation in the world in multiple ways.
