Definition of City size.

Post by Hullu Hevonen »

How large(in population) would your definition of a city be? I have heard many people from many places in the world say different things and have different definitions. Personally I come from a "city" of ~12000 people, but I would have to put my definition at 150-200k for it to be a "city". Though in my younger years I would of put my definition lower then the current.

Nahhh... I've driven through towns with over 10k that didn't have anything more than a "Mayberry" type mainstreet. 100k at least.

I think it rather depends on where you live.
In my current country, the think a city is something which is about 30k big. But they call everything city here, translated roughly 'little city' for a town.

But my homecountry sported cities which only started from about 50k and upwards. And actually we only think of cities if they existed for a long time and have or have had a city wall.

Totally unusable for USA of course, very very young and juvenile country

The "city" where I live has just over 10,000 inhabitants and was granted city status in the early 2000's.

500,000-800,000 to me is a city. Detroit, Seattle, Washington, Cleveland are all in the 500,000 to 800,000 category no? I cant a city smaller than half a million. Other wise to me its a large town.
