Lump sums as gifts - does size matter?

Post by Bateman1982 »

Hi, I read a while back that giving $1 to an AI would improve relations by the same amount as giving them $1000 so the best plan was to give a tiny amount of money to the AI every day to improve relations.

Has this been adjusted in the latest patch? i.e. is it still best to give small amounts of money every turn or does the AI perceive any difference in the amount given.

Will relations improve more if tech is given or is money the main AI concern?

I seams the Diplomacy AI only differentiates between failes and succesfull negotiations. Succesful negotiations increase relation by a fixed percentage (+/- 2%) and failed negotiation do nothing. The main improvement of the AI diplomacy campared to pre patch 3 is that you are now only allowed to give tham a single present (of only 1 dolar if you like) and improve your relation by a fixed small percentag,e while back then you could give them multiple present and become blood brothers instantly.

Sebastiaan is correct that some work was done with this but we do still hope to more accuratley model this in the future. How much benefit you get from specific amounts is not something we have kept notes on.

Difference?

Post by madjack »

Another post to an old topic.

Maybe it should be like this:(basically)

If you pay them like about a month's income (theirs), the bar could go up for fifteen percent or so. For example, you give 3.000 m to a country which is making 100 m a day.

Or for a better one,
the money given = mg
gdp/c of the target country = gdp/c
population of the target country = pop

mg x 30
-------------
gdp/c x pop

for example, for a country with 10.000 gdp/c and 10m pop
gdp/c x pop would be 100.000m.
so giving them 1.000m should make a %30 increase.
(or as much as you decide)

just a thought.

Don't Applaud, Just Throw Money

Bateman,
The AI's work with the old adage "don't applaud just throw money". I've tried giving them techs and products without cash and they don't seem amused as they get more bellicose. But a small dose of cash each day keeps the pesky AI's at bay. I found that I had to actually give small amounts of money along with the techs or products to keep the AI's mollified.
Thanks,

This has been adjusted for update 5, the AI does not factor in the size of the offer.

So does that mean that a 1$ gift is as good as 1 million?

No.Though i can see how that can be easily misunderstood considering the wording.

Pre update 5, the AI didnt really look at the size of an offer.Just for the most part that an offer was made.

Now, post update 5,size of the offer affects the size of the reaction. There also seems to be a "softcap" on said size of reaction, kind of a diminishing returns effect .
30 trillion for instance doent seem to be much more effective than 20 trillion :P

Mind you ,both are effective in getting a large positive reaction

Another thing i should mention is that the size of the recipeint also matters, figuring into the size of the reaction.

So while giving a region like the entire U.S. 10 million, might be received with a yawn and a small positive reaction.
Giving 10 million to a region the size of New Jersey (the U.S. state) might be recieved with a cartwheel and a much larger positive reaction.
(Heck maybe N.J. wouldnt have to shutdown its government that year with such a gift :P )

From what I hear, New Jersey spends more than 10 million a year just to cover up the real waste and corruption. :P
