PLEASE! Help me cull units!

Post by TigerPJM »

OK!

I'm really sorry if this has been asked before. I honestly have searched high and low but haven't found anything that helps yet.

After a few failures over a week or so, I finally got the hang of the economic model and unified Australia in the Campaign. Great.

So, with great anticipation, I went int o the next mission where it is Australia, Philippines and Indomalaysia.

Starting with $18,000 Mil, my economy takes about five days to go bust. As far as I can tell it is because of the massive amount of military units you have in reserve. What I want to know is:

- Is there a way to compare two or more different units side by side (to help me work out which to keep and which to sell)?

- Is there an easier way to sell large numbers of units than to go into the Defence Dept, pressing the "Armed Forces Detail", and bringing up the "All Military Reserves" list and "ctrl+click"ing each and every one? Is there a way to sell all units of a particular type? By using this method, once a sale is completed it jumps back to the top of a very long list, meaning you hav to scroll all the way back through again.

I have been sitting and comparing and gradually culling units for six hours! I'm still only about half way through it! How has everybody else dealt with having a large excess of reserve units that you knew little about? If so, how have you dealt with it?

Thanks heaps!

_select a garrison
_click on the "select all units of the same type" button
_sell
_rinse & repeat with other kind of units you don't want anymore.

I dont think the cost of your reserve units is the problem here for you.
Units in Reserve are dirt cheap.

To lose 18billion in a matter of days, i think its far more likely your ministers made some large purchases. They will spend you into the poor house if your let them.
They could payoff bonds,or purchase resources or/and goods and eat up $18B in a heartbeat.

If thats not it,look at your research spending.

But i seriously doubt the meager cost of reserve units is the cause here.

Welcome to the forums Tiger!

I think Tkobo has the right idea. Something more drastic is draining your cash. That being said, comparing various units is not too hard. Whenever you have a group of units selected/highlighted, and you have opened the details screen up for one of them, there should be a "left" and "right" arrow button on either side of the unit name. This will quickly scroll up or down the selected list of units, allowing you to compare stats. This is also available in the build screen and research screen. I am drawing a blank on whether it is there in a reserve unit list, but I don't see why it would not be.

El Slapper's method is the easiest once you have decided what you want to get rid of.

Thanks for your responses.

I'm really struggling with this one. One thing I've noticed is that even when I set the minister to "Minimise Active Units" he'll still bring a lot of units up from the reserves, which then causes a large shortfall of military equipment which then has to be imported. I think this is the problem. Is there a way to lock units into the reserves so that the minister actually can't bring units into active service?

My social spending is set right at the recommended and my research is set well below the recommended. I also have set the treasurer to "Balance the Budget".

I've played around with it quite a lot but my 18,000mil is being eaten up very, very quickly. It is very frustrating.

Thanks for your help!

To stop your minister from activating units, you need to set your initiatives to zero.

Hmmm, while possible, i dont think thats the money issue either.Or at least not the entire issue.
$18 billion is a lot of military goods.

I still think you need to look at what they (the ministers) are doing with your cash.

You should start by locking the econ minister out of the bond market. If you have debt, and alot of spare cash, the silly ministers will rush out and try to pay it off.

Than look for shortages in addition to mil goods.I suspect something else is happening/has happened.

As Tkobo said, lock the minister out from the bond market (bottom button on the econ minister main screen). After that, you can check your income and expenditures from the econ screen. compare "production" costs, and domestic sales. I have had production ministers decide to sell stuff domestically (and even exporting it) at a hefty loss just to drum up business, so if the production/domestic sales numbers are skewed, you might have to correct such a situation. Nothing will deplete your bank quicker than selling $20k manufactured goods for $18k.

Also, take a look at reducing the various social spending. Unless you have an election "next week", you can afford the DAR hit. Drop stuff like environmental spending and cultural subsidies. Infrastructure, Law enforcement, and Medical are the top three to spend money on, in that order. The others can be skimped on or even dropped to zero, at least temporarily. When the election draws near (a couple months away), you can increase social spending and lower domestic prices to raise DAR...until they re-elect you that is!

"My beloved people! I do not know how to properly thank you for granting me the honor of leading our great country for yet another four years! So... for lack of any better ideas to show my gratitude, I am hereby abolishing social security, welfare, and unemployment payments! If you are having trouble finding a job, please see your local army recruiter!":P

In some rare fiscal emergencies, I have been known to completely shut down my research department as well. You probably don't need to be that drastic, but your ARE the Supreme Ruler, play around and find out what works for you. :)

when you play very poor countries early in the campaign, as Surinam, it is rather a good choice to keep R&D at zero. You don't have enough money to fuel it properly, anyways. Though when Brazil is yours, things begin to change  8)

OK!

Sorry I haven't responded for a while and thanks once again for your responses. It seems I had set up a lazy welfare state!

I cut back on some of my social spending and "hey presto" the budget is back in the black.

I have a lot of my areas of social quality at well above 100%. I there an advantage to having, say, education for example, at 138% quality rating?

Thanks once again! This would have to be one of the best games I've ever played (so far).

Wow! I don't think I ever got Education that high. The different social spending categories all have effects on the functioning of your country. High marks in education will help your research efficiency, if I remember correctly. High infrastructure will boost your overall supply rating. Medicine will raise your life expectancy. Family subsidies increase birth rate. Unemployment insurance will decrease DAR dropping when unemployment rises. Etc. etc. I am not sure I am recollecting all these properly, but you get the picture. Most of the effects are pretty subtle, that is why I usually skimp on all but Infrastructure. Education is nice to keep close to 100%, but not absolutely necessary. The research inventions that boost social spending categories are a good way to replace actual spending (medical or educational).
