Yes. it's a big attraction.
I like to group units into sort of divisional sized groupings. After a while I get an intuative feel for what these groups can achieve before pausing advance or getting too spread out. For me it works better that way for keeping a grasp of what is going on. Naming units helps that.

Plus there are some favorite and famous formations that I like to put in.

Don't know about SR, but on one of my first games with HoI:DD I organized all my troops, named the groups and took the time to immerse myself in the personality of my troops, then I deployed them and the organization I set up was never seen again. Huuuge waste of time.
