Starteda new game from 1936 playing as Ethiopia. Most important settings were: very high volatility and very easy diplomacy.
- got attacked by Italia, let them run out of supplies, reclaimed my territory and annexed the northern access to the red sea and the italian part of Somalia
- around 1937 was war-dec‘d by the UK which was axis aligned. Used that war to annex the british somalia and signed a cease fire after that
Then around 1940 without any notification or alarm the ex-british Somalia becomes independent
After that the world wars come to a halt as petroleum and from then the supplies run out.
Apart from the petroleum problem, which is already tpoic in other threads - please make the game check the conditions for going independent and - at least - add a message to the current region owner.

Re: Ethiopian struggles
And it was yours at the time? Sounds like an improperly set event.

Re: Ethiopian struggles
oh, another one I forgot to mention:
after killing off all italian units and closing all shore accesses with infantry-superstacks, everything went silent until around 1939/40. Meanwhile Italia attacked Sudan and a lot of italian units were stranded W to NW of Khartoum.
Suddenly a lone mot. Engineer crossed the Ethiopian-Sudanese border coming from W or NW and was driving straight into the middle of Ethiopea - but without claiming territory and - at least it looked very much like it - without taking the missing supply into consideration. Suddenly it turned in northern direction and attacked one of the neighboring cities of Addis Abbeba - the one of the 2-3 in the SE of Addis Abbeba. This happened two or three times with different cities.

Re: Ethiopian struggles
For something like that, we'd need a savegame to analyze exactly what the unit is doing.
