Disabling Helicopter Supply of ships
Does anyone else find it a little annoying that when you transport a helicopter with troops in aboard a ship, that by the time the ship gets to the launching point, that the helicopter no longer has any supplies left so it cannot resupply the ground troops it is carrying?
I'd like to propose that the resuppling of ships is disabled for helicopters. What do others think?

Airplanes shoul'd not be able to supply ships too.

I have never noticed that before and as you may know I use Helo's extensively. Does the vessel they are on have supply in it once you arrive at your destination?

What are they using the supply for? If they are idle in a Helo, they should not be using supply. I will test that when I get a chance.

Re: Disabling Helicopter Supply of ships
When I use a LHD/A the escorts always draw supply from the CV/LH. Maybe I have never ran one "dry" which would be why I have never noticed the escorts drawing from the Helo's.

I'll give it a try when I get home now I have some helo's and a carrier. I'll see under what circumstances they do it.GIJoe597 wrote:When I use a LHD/A the escorts always draw supply from the CV/LH. I *think* however, ships draw their supplies from ANY nearby transport unit which is why they use the supplies, it could also be other planes using them after going on a sortie as I usually have a carrier group to escort my transports but I don't think that would be it alone.

Re: Disabling Helicopter Supply of ships
I tried putting a helo on carrier with 6 escort ships, helo was full of supplies when I left territorial waters, by the time it got to the objective, it has no supplies.
I studied it a bit closer, and it seems that the ships resupply an equal amount from the helo and the carrier, meaning the helo runs out of supplies after only about 20 hexes at most (helo has 48t of supplies). I stopped it just short of running out and it had lost the same amount of supplies as the carrier.
For me this reinforces why the helo resupply of ships should be removed.
Out of interest, planes cannot resupply ships so I cannot see why this can't be extended to include helo's.

I still learn things I do not know. I have never noticed this before, either it is new or for the past 9 years we all missed it.

I think its always been this way to be honest but I haven't really cared until my skill level has increased enough to become aware.GIJoe597 wrote:I still learn things I do not know. I have never noticed this before, either it is new or for the past 9 years we all missed it.

Either way, next time I have a LHD/CV fleet carry choppers, I am gonna watch that, cannot have my Green Berets without ammo.

Re: Disabling Helicopter Supply of ships
That was exactly the reason I noticed, they ran out of supplies, I send choppers in, and look no supply. Normally I land directly on the coast so I use the ship to resupply them directly which is probably why I never noticed but now i'm striking inland directly with them, I've come to notice it a lot more now that i'm taking my time and running the game on fast and not warp speed. (basically i'm raiding using helo's, or seizing important access routes during a landing).GIJoe597 wrote:Either way, next time I have a LHD/CV fleet carry choppers, I am gonna watch that, cannot have my Green Berets without ammo.

That is a great way to play. I have always used that method in Africa and S. America.

Re: Disabling Helicopter Supply of ships
Supplying ships with helicopters works. I sometimes send helos to help ships that have run out of fuel. Does not matter that they have no place to land, it works anyway. Doesn't feel realistic, though I often prefer that instead of sending ships to help, as I tend to forget those.
The supply system for helicopters works bad. Airlifting units into enemy territory is mostly messed up by helos waiting for supply in the newly taken unsupplied village instead of flying a hundred kilometres where they can find good supply. The real mess begins when there's other owned but badly supplied places along the way, as that makes them stop on their way in into enemy territory. Therefore I prefer attacking with planes, only sending helicopters to get them back.
