SRGW - United States - Land Fabrication Changes suggested

Post by geminif4ucorsair »

* * The United States locations for Land Fabrication are all located at traditional "Fort" locations within the States,
for unknown reasons.

A lot of the Fort locations in the U.S. did not exist in 1914, that are on the Map. Changes to these will be recommended be changed (forthcoming thread).

--------------

* * Suggestion:

* DELETE ALL 'Land Fabrication" sites as currently listed in the U.S. (seven).

* Delete the Land Fabrication at X 402 Y 195, for example.

--------------

* * ADD all the following locations, which are historical locations where the majority of vehicles in 1912-14 came from under U.S. Army contracts:

- Location Vehicle Manufacturer

* CLEVELAND X 408 Y 196 White Motor Co. - 1 Land Fabrication

* ARDMORE (PA) X 443 Y 205 Autocar Company
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 1 x Land Fabrication

* CLINTONVILLE (WI) X 374 Y 171 FWD (Four Wheel Drive) Company
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 1 x Land Fabrication

* ALLENTOWN (PA) X 443 Y 200 Mack Mfg. Company (before it was known as Mack Truck...)
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 1 x Land Fabrication

* SOUTH BEND (IN) X 383 Y 192 Studebaker Corp.
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 1 x Land Fabrication

* DETRIOT (MI) X 400 Y 188 - Cadillac (GM) Corp. - delivered 1st A/C to US Army
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 4 x Land Fabrication - Federal Motor Truck Co.
- Packard Motor Co.
- Ford Motor Co.; actually at nearby Dearborn, MI
- map too crowded to place there.

* ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL X 361 Y 194
Add: Military Complex, Barracks, 1 x Land Fabrication - QMC [Federal Government truck factory]

-------------

These were the eight major vehicle providers to the U.S. Government from 1914 through World War One.

Thanks for considering. :-)

Updated, but only 2 at Cadillac to not make the change to radical, 9 total.

Interesting that there was nothing in the south or the west.

Interesting that there was nothing in the south or the west.
Mostly the result of the history of the U.S., where heavy industry was concentrated from the earliest days after the Civil War in the areas east of the Mississippi River. Thus, technical innovation began in these regions.

Same situation with aircraft industry, whose early inventors and production facilities were in places like Long Island, Buffalo (Brewster), etc. etc. It wold only be in the 1930s that aircraft plants began springing up with the greater Los Angeles area (Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Inglewood, etc.), the result of both new aircraft designers living there or having moved to the area, after working for other established aircraft firms in the East. The great expansion begun @ 1940 was paid for by government funds, where the Sun Belt states became increasingly important to eliminate the weather related delays at traditional aircraft manufacturer locations (Buffalo, etc.).

At the time of 1914's war start, US Navy Pacific naval forces were called "Pacific Station", not Fleet, because there size and basing was so limited. Much of the latter famous locations for fleet repair were not established until the war, with the building of a new generation of post-Dreadnought battleships (beginning with USS Texas). These new battleships had size and tonnage that demanded new dockyards and graving docks for maintenance for repair, spawning new facilities on the West Coast, paid for by government funding (the Naval Shipyard program, as at Mare Island (San Francisco), Long Beach Naval Shipyard (Long Beach), etc.
