It is not likely that the positive feedback in this chain reaction will be disrupted.

Do you think the people on Easter island, when they were cutting down the last trees, realized what was happening? I bet those who preached for a change to more conservative tree-use policies were shouted down, accused of being corrupt and among those eaten first. :D
