Ten MV-22 Ospreys have left North Carolina for Iraq, a Corps spokesman has confirmed, marking the aircraft’s first deployment.
The Ospreys, with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263, based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., flew onto the amphibious assault ship Wasp on Monday and are heading to Iraq, said Maj. Eric Dent, spokesman for Marine Corps headquarters.

plus they are less annoying for people under. In this very specific context, could be useful as it would not fuel resentment against troops over there.
you know, I live in Taverny, 500m from the base that hold the french "nuclear trigger". I've had my share of helo noise when Sarkozy was elected. It was very annoying - and we're at peace.

Seems like there might be some engine problems,pre-exisiting that they didnt talk about, and newly experienced due to the Iraq deployment.

The story varies from site to site, but the gist seems to be accurate and basically say "the engines made by Rolls-Royce had issues, that may or may not have been handled/fixed.
AND the longterm part of that fix is a switch to General Electirc engines for the future"
Still no word of any lost ,in or out of combat.BUT due to the engine issues
they are saying that combat readiness has been lower than expected and wanted.

I believe they call it field testing. No amount of toodling around somewhere in the U.S. will reveal what it will encounter in action.Tkobo wrote:they are saying that combat readiness has been lower than expected and wanted.

Isn't this the same aircraft that took around 2 decades to finally get working?

Yes, but that's generally how long most modern aircraft take especially one with this new technologyCSA Partisan wrote:Isn't this the same aircraft that took around 2 decades to finally get working?
They're in development for 10-15 years before order, and finally deployed.
The F-22 Raptor had it's first flight in 1997(prototype was in 1990 I believe), and have just been introduced.

You forgot that they also always go over budget and become extremely controversial.Kreiger815 wrote:Yes, but that's generally how long most modern aircraft take especially one with this new technologyCSA Partisan wrote:Isn't this the same aircraft that took around 2 decades to finally get working?

Budget problems are a result of bad politicians and legal controversies that force projects to take longer than they really should.

Yup.Im a fan of the aircraft, and they could go along way in alleviating the helicopter shortage in afghanistan. And if they ever get the rest of the guns mounted, they would be even more useful.

The V-22 Osprey has been plagued with mission readiness rates hovering at 62%, but operations in Afghanistan have seen those rates rising steadily through the 70% and 80% range, according to U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway.
