Re: Zuikaku's mod

#136 Post by Tnarg » Mar 31 2017

Hello Zuikaku, I wanted to let you know that the W2020.CVP seems to set the Crimea to be independent rather than a colony of Russia. I tested this on the TR2017 sandbox and W2020 sandbox. If I leave out the W2020.CVP file in your download and recahce Crimea is a colony of Russia, but I lose all of the changes from your unit file. If I include it and recache Crimea is independent and your mod works great!

My computer died and I have a new one and had to reload everything, so I don't have any older files messing anything up.

Wanted to say that I was running a great TR2017 game, with very hard military, and hard diplomacy, and hard economics as Russia. The ai military was tough and your units are great! Ukraine was on a rampage and was mopping up most of Eastern Europe, all I could do was contain.

Thanks

Actually the great part of update with significant gameplay changes in naval area is almost ready but I'm coordinating with BGs over their new database entries. So, there will be version 2.0 :-)

As for the turkish goodies - some of the entries you proposed are already in the stock game (like Firtina or Altay). I'll see what can be done about other.

Anyway I need an advice from all of you. What do you think about removing some "world units". I'm thinking about removing early generic tanks like Mk I fast tank and similar designs. The reasonings for this - well, industrially undeveloped regions tend to researche them and then build hundreds of them , and by the time they do that they are already obsolete. And it is weird thing to see Thailand, Ethiopia or Egypt in '43 producing masses of tanks. My opinion is that it kills historical immersion. Also, I'm not sure what to do with generic cold war tanks. AI regions can buy tanks like they did historically and human players playing smaller regions can buy licenbces when they gain tech levels - like they mostly did historically.

I like the idea of these start dates, but getting into such a work is highly unlikely due to my free time available.

If they are just say T-55's with a different name but given to the "worldwide" region then yes I would say they can go. If they serve a specific niche that say the US or USSR could benefit from also then there might be some validity to keeping them though I would say the better option is making a US and USSR specific fictive design in that case.

Also if they stay I would say as a rule they should be inferior to contemporary designs from say the US, Israel, Germany or Russia.
To me if countries like Mali suddenly decides to make their own tank designs I would say that as a rule it should be the mali equivalent of the Asad Babil not the T-72A. That is to say an inferior copy of something made by major tank manufacturers.
Actually I wish designs like the Asad Babil required the region to have access to original tank from which it is derived in order to research them.

It would also be great if it was possible to acquire access to research of the designs of a region after annexing it. If that was possible I would say kill all generic designs and only add fictive designs to historically important tank manufacturers where needed to fill a specific role.

countries like Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Greece share same letter code
(E Units are produced by/for Europe, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Greece) but this is problem
F.g turkey research Altay mbt its specified for turkey but all others can produce it why
It can be
turkey P Unused
Greece [ Unused

Z Arab (Iran/Iraq/etc) including Pakistan
can be
Iran \ Unused
Pakistan ] Unused

R Russia, Ukraine, Former Soviet, Belarus
can be
Ukraine ^ Unused

New game engine must enlarge this limitations

and you can also with your 2.0 mod

I would be very careful with just giving out new region codes (if it is even possible I have not checked). For starters chances are BG will use one for Austria-Hungary meaning your Turkey might be their Austria-Hungary.
Also there is the question of why a nation should have a unique region ID. If I where to pick from 1936 or the Cold War Sweden, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland and Spain would be higher on my list of nations.

I am not referring to graphics at all. I am fully aware that this is about the "Regions" field for default.unit.

What I am doing is first off saying that simply grabbing all of the spots for 2017/2020 only is not exactly ideal especially given that BG probably takes at least one for Austria-Hungary and I doubt BG wants to maintain concurrent databases if not forced to do so. Also as Austria has a good deal of locally produced equipment in its army it might not be bad to use it in SRU anyway
Your suggestions are also quite sub-par for anything but 2017+.

Second I am questioning some of your choices. I would really like to know why Greece should have a unique ID over other countries?
Countries like Sweden that have a large arms production for all of the periods covered by the SR series and also have a larger arms export than any countries you have suggested according to some sources. It is also grouped with Switzerland a nation itself with a largely locally produced army.
So why not Sweden or Switzerland instead?
Why should it beat Brazil that is grouped with its century long rival Argentina that both design and manufacture parts of their materiel meaning that in a war Brazil could be fighting Argentina with argentine weapons while Argentina is fighting with Brazilian weapons.
Why not one these two long time rivals both with some domestic weapons production instead?
Why should Spain not have their own regional ID when they manufacture a good deal of their own equipment, have a quite decent defence budget and would work for all periods of time?
What about Iraq? They have historically had large defence spending and did construct some locally designed weapons.
Why should Canada and Australia be grouped when both have a decent defence industry and fairly large well equipped armies with a decent part being domestically designed and produced?
As mentioned above there is also Austria. We might see it added in SR:GW anyway and given the difficulty of maintaining concurrent lists and the Austrian army being somewhat unique it might not be a bad candidate.

If you open up for the usage of a very limited resource I would very much expect there to be a debate over how it should be used. There are plenty of nations that could have their own region code.
Given that BG has previously taken content from Zuikakus mod (with good reason I would say) I consider it especially important to have a debate over this as said choices could even become official.

I have a feeling that if BG had more IDs than those 5 listed they would have mentioned them. They might be able to add more but how difficult it is I do not know. I agree it would be great for all nations to have their own unique ID but until BG makes that change the challenge would be to get the most out of what there is.

Also neither the Altay nor the Zulfiqar are purely domestic designs.
The Zulfigar I has a good deal of M48/M60 and T-72 in it and even the latest version still has some components originally developed by the US or USSR. How much is hard to say as Iran is not telling us but there is little to indicate that the Zulfigar II and III is not derived from the original.
The Altay is made by Hyundai Rotem amogst others and incorporates technology originally developed for the K2. It is actually part of the contract that the RoK will share their tank design experience with Turkey. There is a good deal of Korean tank in the Altay.

Why do you think that I can add new regional codes ? I think devs are the only ones that can do this kind of changes.
Also why Greece?
