Odd war declaration?

Post by GIJoe597 »

Killing some time I started a game in 1914 as the USA to test something. Normal things happened to kick off WWI, but then, Germany declared war on Austria-Hungary in Aug of 1914. Anyone else seen this?

GW 1914 starts with a default setting of NONE. I did not change it.

It doesn't matter. I quit the game. This is my third 1914 start and each and every time Germany steamrolls everything with Armored cars which have extreme experience and their navy does not even slow down as it barrels over the US Navy. Both France and the UK fell so fast it was not even a contest.

Back to SRU again for a bit.

Yeah, very weird for them to declare war on AH with volatility off. Never seen them do that yet.

As for Germany's performance, I agree to an extent. Their navy simply steamrolls England's, primarily because navies don't organize into fleets. England's fleet is just as advanced as Germany's and also much larger. But despite the large number of modern ships, they have an even larger number of older designs which are simply not able to face the advanced German battleships. They spread out much wider than Germany's fleet does, and it all ultimately allows for a better concentration of modern firepower than the british are able to manage which results in their fleets being systematically annihilated.

As for the performance of the land war, I wonder if it has anything to do with the speed at which the game is played on. In all of my test games where I play on faster speeds, Germany performs just like you describe, but in my slower games they fail to achieve the same success. In my last Russian game, they stalled out fairly early on the French front, and only managed to take a single Belgian city before being kicked back out of Belgium altogether. Austria also failed to take Belgrad, and with the massive concentration of troops left in that city, the Austrians looked in no shape to rectify that situation.

And I was doing very little to pressure either of them to attribute this behavior to. I waited nearly a week to advance on either one of their territory's in order to make sure they had time to get garrisons active because I just don't think it's fair for me to run through defenseless territory right at the outset of war. My fleet was heavily engaged with the German fleet in the Baltic waters at this time, but that had absolutely nothing to do with the land war and doesn't really explain their failure to advance on the western front. Well, except for the massive amount of military goods needed to repair damaged naval vessels. Perhaps all the injured cruisers and battleships that managed to escape forced them to expend all of their military goods on repairs and hindered their ability to attack as strongly as they usually do. Not sure.
