SRGW - New AI Controlled "Reserves" - dump it or revise it!

Post by geminif4ucorsair »

Since SRGW came out, have been playing smaller European countries (and making suggestions for various changes :D ).
Among these, Serbia, because one knows it is inevitable Austria-Hungary is going to attack, no matter what you do -
especially with the non-historical Diplomatic-Civilian-Causus Bellie ratings that have been slapped on Serbia.

Several observations are worthy:

1. Serbia can survive the first month of combat with existing Orbat, but highly recommend that the revised Barracks and order-of-battle be adopted (see separate thread) for better historical balance and play.
This applies particularly because Serbia lacks the historical Artillery numbers.

2. Within about a month of game play, Serbia get it with the new AI "reserves" minimum requirement......makes no sense that a small country like Serbia (and several others) would be saddled with this maintenance of reserve forces, to the point that new units cannot be brought to play, nor can the play add Militia onto the game.

This first hit Serbia about three weeks into the game and impacted the ability to finish raising Militia units in smaller towns. Several Infantry units had been mobilized at that point, moved northwest and northward (toward Belgrade).

It continued over the next week plus, when Serbia finished building its first Armored Car unit (design acquired from France), which was immediately placed in Reserve status by the computer; further efforts to bring the unit to Active status only came when another couple Cavalry (already not 100% from battle damage), were placed in Reserve.

3. We need some commentary and guidelines from BG on this new addition (or at least I had not run into it with SR-36/SRU) in playing Soviet Union). Why it has been added? And, what parameters (percentages of units now must be anticipated to be kept in national reserve, etc.?

4. Or, drop the whole idea and save a lot of code writing, better utilized elsewhere.....

[This reminds me too much of the "vulnerability" aspect....those little red dot's adjacent Unit details.....that sometimes would be so inappropriately applies - can remember seeing 1936, brand new design destroyers get red dots placed on them in the most inaccurate ways, where Green dots should have been applied.] |O

My views anyway.

Sorry, what new addition?

That's a big post, a short summary would be appreciated.

You are of course always right, so this function may have been in SRU, as this player was long into SR-36 and SRGW came out so recently, must have missed it's intro in SRU.

SUMMARY.

* Small powers are inordinately effected by establishing a minimum reserve requirement, especially for players that like to micro-manage, ie, lock all Minister out of control, or so it would seem.

* Historically, every country had Reserves, but once war began, there was no standard as to how many were retained on the domestic front (as SR reserves).

Example: Consider that Germany in 1945 was taking in 14-16 year olds regularly to main the front-line units; at the same time, the U.S. was doing no such thing [retaining its Draft age minimum at 18-years old].

* It all depends on the conditions of the war one is fighting. That should be up to the Player.

I am no Dev or rep for BG but I am struggling to understand what you are suggesting. Are you typing there is a hard coded amount of Reserve Manpower that will stay in the pool and you cannot use it? Not enough manpower to deploy forces even though you have reserves?
