Rise of The ROK

Post by medic911 »

Technical Settings: 1949 start with ROK
Standard resources and funds, Medium approval effects, Critical opinion on, Random Events Medium, Electricity sales on, loyalty off, No merchant marine diplomacy (makes it easier to bolster enemy nations military like North vietnam so they don’t just fall over to france)
Nuke penalty low, enhanced spot but not ranges, Weather on, and difficulty of High-normal-normal with allied victories and high volatility.

The Narrative:
After world war two, our people ended decades of unbearable Japanese occupation and once again were free to determine our own destiny—under the watchful eyes of the Americans and the looming shadow of the communists to the north. It is clear that America is far more interested in Japan than Korea, this is equal parts blessing and curse. Gaining our own governance and military control so soon comes at the price of weak security. Rumor has it that the soviet-backed north is building up their forces with tanks and artillery. We must be ready to defend ourselves; America's hatred for the communists may be second only to their reluctance to intervene in yet another war, this time for a people they can't even find on the map.

October 1949:
The new president is determined to walk between three delicate tight-ropes:
• Showing his people, and the world, that the ROK is pro capitalism and democracy by sweeping economic and social reform
• Raising the nation's fledgling defense capabilities
• Becoming a global economic participant "No village was ever destroyed by trade."

In the initial wave of reform, the income tax was abolished and spending on infrastructure, education, family subsidy, and the police redoubled. An investment was made to healthcare and diplomatic agents began working immediately to secure more agreements with rich nations of the west. The military was a matter of greater difficulty.

The united states left little intact military infrastructure, and equipped only a few small regiments of lite infantry (recon units).
Image

A mass mobilization of civil military reserves was therefore ordered and all population centers began to drill garrisons of volunteer officers and NCOs and compulsory able-bodied males 16-35. (I love the new maximize garrisons button... if it isnt new, its new to me!)

Immediately, both useless naval fabs were deactivated and a new land fab created in the southern area of the nation. Weapons to equip artillery and infantry units were then obtained through trade. The power grid will need to be the next thing addressed, as the ROK requires 20,000,000 power units and produces 2,500,000. (maybe that income tax will have to come back)

(To address the military problem in a timely manner, I took advantage of the Zuikaku feature)
Our diplomats arranged for the amicable trade of several spare american warships and british submarines. Even a few APC's from england and canada were included in the deal before the two powers decided to raise the price out of our acceptable range. The saved money, time, and goods were poured into the construction of two power facilities.

July 1950:
We are experiencing a labor shortage now that active military personnel number over 200,000 and more work has been done to update the power generation capacity of Korea. Through trade and production we have equipped a number of foot infantry, push guns, and a small QRF of APCs and mobile AT platforms. The famed squadron of Pappy Boyington even donated their aircraft to us, VMF 214! All in all, Korea finds itself in some debt, struggling to become self-sufficient, and with little arms, but plenty of men willing to bare them!

Nations from across the globe helped Korea grow with subsidized coal and consumer goods, and germany even allowed our armorers access to the designs of their light machine guns. Elsewhere, the Vietnam war has heated up as the soviet union seems to have interdicted a massive French force of merchant ships carrying troops. An entire division of over 30K troops appears to have been sunk en route to Vietnam.

ALARM BELLS SHRIEK!
"What was that?"
"War were declared . . . "

Today the DPRK launched attacks against us, here is the front line as the battle began…
Image

Enemy aircraft were surprised to find AAA on the ground, a state secret well kept! An emergency war tax of 20% began immediately after the invasion. The enemy had tanks, and we did not, but our brave infantry fought them off with lite at weapons and artillery.

Soon the enemy retreated, but a deadly artillery standoff ensured, there were tremendous casualties. It was determined that we should risk sending up our fledgling airforce to drive away the artillery! Our brave pilots took terrible fire and were ambushed on the return trip by enemy fighters. Many enemy artillery units were destroyed or damaged, but our counter-attack from mobile infantry failed miserably. A decision was made then to send in the navy.

The navy took a beating and only marginally disrupted the enemy position, but it did distract them long enough for a 2nd counter attack to form, this time, with much needed anti-tank resources. All remaining equipment was called into the fight in an attempt to break the enemy lines and relieve pressure on our front and the many civilians under artillery threat.

Image

Our army nearly broke through, but were forced to turn back. The navy, in desperate attempt to force a breakthrough, neared the shore and lost a destroyer to ground fire. The airforce destroyed more artillery, but again was forced back in tatters. The navy has no ship not listing with damage. A heavy slugfest ensued, until the 10th of July.

By July tenth, more reserves had been mustered, and another counter on the way. The remnants of the air force bombed around the clock to soften the enemy and made significant strides in eliminating enemy artillery and tanks. By the end of the 10th, the enemy had enough and moved back from the front. Just then, a delivery of british mk4 tanks arrived. Crews raced to get them battle ready, but the counter-attack didn’t wait for them—the enemy was gone, it was time to press our advantage!

It was a trap! The enemy re-appeared and nearly swallowed the division whole! Surrounded, several AT units were wiped out in a rear guard action that saved the other two-thousand men in the attack The decision was reconsidered again; time to wait for the tanks!

The 4th counter included a two pronged assault by the former american tanks on the west, and the former british on the east coming around in a hook.
Image

Well, the 4th counter attack did the trick and we steamrolled the enemy! We sent a referendum to the people (coin flip, best 2 of 3) to decide the fate of north korea, colony, or annexation… The people decided that the communist threat required a buffer zone between the soviets and the republic and colonization was chosen. The nation of "South Korean North Korea" was born!

It wasnt too long before we decided it was time Korea project itself on the international scene and join in the crusade against the evil oppressors of freedom elsewhere in the world and join our allies' fight. Korean troops have been sent to Vietnam!
Image

Nearly half our initial force was cut off, surrounded, and destroyed defending the main highway to Saigon as Laos fell to the NVA (soviet) forces. They did buy enough time for the rest of the troops to arrive and the capitals of RVN and Cambodia are safe in ROK hands. Even the oft-fought-over highway is currently in ROK hands, but fought over daily. The east coast is slowly falling and it is feared the NVA will attempt a pincer move to cut off and surround the highway defenders again. A force of marines are being trained (american Amphibious tracks) to strike back at the coast and alleviate this pressure. It will be at least 3 months before they arrive; we hope we can hold!

Meanwhile, on the home front, the people grow weary of the conservationist measures placed on the economy and wonder why the 20% war tax has not been lifted. Citizens of South Korean North Korea are also angry over the deportation of their coal and industrial goods without compensation and relations between the two Koreas remain bitter. (though somehow we were able to bury the hatchet with Japan in a couple of weeks... I guess centuries of hate and racism is all water under the bridge when faced with communist threats!)

Upcoming goals of the scenario:
Develop research stations.
Double the economy
Land marines in eastern RVN
Force the NVA north of the DMZ

Well that went well. :D Fortunate the Chinese didn't get involved in Korea. Are the Russians actively assisting North Vietnam right now?

Republic Of Korea Forces Vietnam Commanding General Chae Myung-shin has authorized a plan to send half of the Marines to Korea, the 2nd Division "Blue Dragon" Marines will be equipped with the first amphibious tracks to roll off the domestic production line and be sent straight into battle. The 1st Division "Sea Dragon" Marines will equip later and be ready as a reserve force.

The current ORBAT and deployment map looks a little like this...

Image

Capitol Division, 15 thousand of the brave defenders of our front line in the Korean Civil War, are spread over the Saigon and Cambodia battle zones, with two front positions W/ artillery, and half of their infantry power in reserve SW of Saigon.

White Horse Division, the reserve force of the KCW, are currently 13K strong after suffering losses. They are positioned at the far front line, beyond the main allied battle zone, where territory is exchanged between allied (French, Australian, and British forces) and enemy (China, Soviet, and NVA forces) regularly.

Neither position can advance without the enemy cutting them down outright or surrounding them and starving them out, as happened to the first part of White Horse when they deployed and lost over 6,000 troops. Thats where the Marine invasion at Cam Rahn Bay comes in.

The Marines will be fast-mobile infantry, later accompanied by SPG artillery, allowing them to undertake more direct offensive operations and respond as a QRF. At this point ROKFV directives clearly limit the field of operations to Vietnam South of the DMZ, and to the defense of Cambodia, with the goal of assisting in the liberation of both territories and the enabling of the French and greater allied armies to undertake an offensive to the north if they so desire. Time will tell if the plan works or not...

An armored brigade attached to and re-enforced the beleaguered White Horse Division at the front lines just in time to lift a siege that threatened to starve them into submission.
The Situation on the ground improved slightly as British army Forces captured the Cam Rahn Bay. 1st Brigade of the 2nd Marines deployed ahead of the division to secure a staging area there. In early May as Hungry ROK submarines patrolled the coast for soviet merchant ships and sank several. Meanwhile, Tiger Division reserves in Long Xugen moved up to the east side of the river near Phnum Penh in Cambodia to defend recent French gains there and permit French and Belgian advances into former Laos, this as the Enemy Coalition made a big push to regain the RVN east coast.

White Horse forces from Bien Hoa received artillery re-enforcement and redeployed to Da Lat in preparation for the final Marine forces to arrive (a month behind schedule). Blue Dragon 2nd Marine Division is comprised of 2 inf brigades of LVT4 tracks and an armored brigade of AMX tanks W/ infantry support, each brigade has a number of Priest SPGs from the United States reserves, totaling just over 1000 artillerymen.

By mid August, the last Marines arrived and the Division split into the three brigades in preparation to secure various position on the Eastern Seaboard. No action has been reported by Tiger Division for over 3 months. White Horse has been free from enemy harassment for 1 month and is still refitting from the last encounter, a major encirclement broken by Marine tanks, White horse tanks, Belgian infantry, and French air support over a weeklong battle. The 3 submarines, Alliance Acheron, and Ambush, are sinking between 1 and 4 merchant ships per week over the last 2 months, mostly soviet, and some Chinese.

18 August, a large, but short lived, enemy attack penetrated allied lines North of Buon me Thuot and had to be repelled by White Horse. They destroyed several enemy units and forced a retreat after a day of fighting. The marines counter attacked.

Image

The Marine counter attack failed miserably and led to the destruction of an artillery battery. Artillery has been detached from the armored brigade and returned to 3rd Marine Infantry Brigade, 2nd division. The missing firepower will hopefully be offset by the addition of two or three more tank regiments, whatever is left in reserve back home.

After months of slogging forward, the marine armored and 2nd infantry brigade advanced to the outskirts of Da Nang

Image
The soviets reinforced Da Nang with about 10K troops after the picture was taken, the city was full to bursting with enemy infantry and mobile AT guns. Then China arrived with more troops, and enemies overflowed from the city in droves. The infantry in both units were severely weakened and several elements were swapped out for their counterparts in the third brigade. White Horse Armored Brigade also arrived to hold the line against the enemy counterattack while 2nd brigade 2nd Marines and 1st brigade (armored) 2nd Marines regrouped at Qui Nhon. The White Horse armor, with British infantry support, recaptured and held at Tam Ky outside Da Nang in order to hold a better defensive position.
Then, On November Tenth, seeing a large soviet naval convoy 2 days out to the north, and French armor a day away to the south, White Horse armored brigade launched a daring raid on the city and captured it hours before the enemy could land more reinforcements. The convoy turned back rather than face the entrenching allied force. 5 merchant ships were sunk in the retreat. The next day, 1st Brigade 2nd Marines arrived to push on towards Hue. The city of Hue fell with little resistance to combined ROK, French, and British forces. A small redeployment to re-align defenses and allow the allies to advance with greater freedom was done, as shown in the following ORBAT/deployment photograph...
Image
Force Strength currently stands as follows:
Tiger: 17,000 Infantry and artillery, foot mobile
White Horse: 12,300 Infantry and artillery, foot mobile W/ 1,800 armored personnel.
Blue Dragon: 16,000 armored Infantry and tanks W/ 990 artillerymen in very very bad SPGs

On the home front, Koreans remain unhappy with the war tax, so that will have to go away sometime in the new year. Two research centers are under construction with the help of our first engineer unit; one of them should be done by January. The Koreans are self-sufficient in electric power now and have reasonable stocks of raw materials, so once the new technology increases our power grid by 50%, we will begin industrial fabrication of goods for consumers, industry, and military.

Next Year, our goals are:
Eliminate the income tax again (emergency war tax) and rebuild out of the resulting deficit.
Hold the line against the two highway counter from china that has already pushed out the French between White Horse and Blue Dragon.
And finally, catch up on research, spending every extra dollar to keep the economy expanding or the research tree moving forward

Game Info:
So I just noticed china has 66% war justification and 0% relations with me, same with Russia (65% though). The bulk of my military force is in Vietnam, where I've been responsible for about 30-40% of the soviet/Chinese casualties by my estimation, and exactly 331 NVA, soviet, Chinese, or Bulgarian units destroyed. My narrative will shift to dealing with these issues and furthering my economic and domestic approval goals—while continuing to track the progress of the Vietnam war. I NEED YOUR HELP in deciding exactly how, and with what, to modernize my air and naval forces with the limited tech available to a nation like the ROK in the early-mid 50's. Thoughts?

Also, I'd love to be able to build/deploy firebases or some type of fortifications on un-occupied foreign tiles that I have military units on. Maybe they can naturally degrade overtime until they are lost if theres no unit from the nation that owns it stationed there for some time? IDK just spit-balling there, but my guys get shredded just hanging out in the jungle, even when 'entrenched'

Narrative:
December 1951:
The week of Christmas, British and French forces have been pushed back across the DMZ by China. Hue and the ROK Marines there have been surrounded, but are decimating any attempts to attack them. Reserve forces called in from Da Nang and further south handle them with relative ease until Italian and Netherland's troops came to re-enforce allied lines. As soon as China falls back, the Soviets push inward with more forces. Belgian troops and French tanks encircle them, but the enemy breaks out. While the east coast is secure and the highway intact, the west is firmly in enemy hands all the way to within a few miles of Pleiku by the 30th. Battles in the center of sector 4 are fierce and costly for both sides, but do not involve Korea—yet.

Image

In Navy News, 22, 44, 16—the number of merchant ships each of the submarines in my wolf pack have sunk in the roughly one year of interdiction operations along the ROKFV coastal responsibility zone (pulled that stat in March of 52'.)

In domestic news, people all over Korea cheered the abolishing of the War Tax. Excesses in power production led to a factory frenzy, subsequently causing power demand to spike above available production again! While the nation is running on over 3 million a day in deficit spending, the average daily trade revenue is 5 million also, making a slight profit most days. And our expenses are inflated due to war costs, construction costs, and a demand for resources for the war effort that otherwise would be traded (or not produced and money saved in production costs). 2 research stations are built, one just now operational, another at 50% with the army corps of engineers working to speed things up a bit.

1 January 1952:
General Chae Myung-shin was relieved of his duties as commander of ROKFV in a ceremony at Buon Me Thuot, hallowed site of the heroic last stand of White Horse division's third brigade and the division's artillery battalion. The graves of over 7,000 of Korea's bravest soldiers were the backdrop for the unveiling of a war memorial etched with the names of the fallen carved from local stone. General Lee Jin-tae, commander of White Horse, has been promoted to take his place. General Chae Myung-shin's exemplary record has led the young nation's small military in the defeat of two of the world's largest armed forces in combat in foreign territory with an astounding kill ratio. The enemy has taken 450,000 casualties; Allied forces have lost over 184,000 casualties, and Korea a mere 20,000 or so, most coming when 12 units from White Horse were destroyed in the delaying action at Buon Me Thuot.

Image
(periodically I'll try and capture a stat-shot of casualties and create a graph for the war... wish I'd have thought to do that from the start)

General Chae Myung-shin will now oversee the entire Korean Military from Central Command in Seoul. His objectives are modernization of the military, and expansion of defensive capabilities in the face of a very hostile China and suspect Soviet Union. Already, Chae has ordered all foot-mobile infantry to be replaced by the MK II Bren Carrier and the foot-mobile equipment re-organized into two divisions of "North Korean Defense Force." The 1st Marine division will still be trained, but an extra "7th Reserve Brigade" of Marines will also be trained, and two more reserve Infantry Divisions. The marines will continue to use the LVT-4 track and AMX tanks. Army divisions will receive AMX tanks as they become available from production lines and older model tanks will then be transferred to the NKDF. Each active division will also receive two motorized Engineer companies, with additional Engineers in the reserve pool. While General Chae has extensive knowledge in ground forces, he lacks complete understanding of naval and air challenges, so he has reached out to members of the defense cabinet and field commanders in the Navy and Air Force to ask for direction on research, development, and production on the next generation of air and naval capabilities for the ROK. What will then (you folks) decided to recommend?

Final Note: Capitol Division (Tiger) is preparing to pull out for a refitting in Seoul, and their equipment will be transferred to Pyongyang to form the 1st NKDF Division. Their armored assets have been transferred to White Horse, and White horse's total armored force has been moved to the ZoC between sectors 3 and 4 in order to shore up defenses and provide a QRF to relieve Hue or Da Nang should either become encircled by forces too large to handle. (see deployment map in previous post for a reference if needed)

I love Korean AARs, mainly because I am South Korean. :-)
Also, if its still possible, I recommend you annex North Korea. It might be a buffer yes, but North Korea has more resources then South Korea and might be helpful of improving SK's economy.

Anyways, keep up the good work!

Game Notes:
Korea is doing well domestically and militarily. My challenge right now is to continue growth despite a lack of power, raw materials, and labor force, and maintain my ready reserve manpower incase of attack by the reds… both of them have over 60% CB on me. I still need suggestions for naval and air units for my modernization of military forces (at early-mid 1950s) also willing to take APC and AT gun suggestions and suggestions for SPGs.
I am also trying to pause every few months to record Vietnam War casualties on a table for yall

Oh and to respond to Okmangeez, I can apparently annex or liberate. I used a coin flip to simulate a referendum and it came up colonize (3 times in a row as a matter of fact) so I went with that. I can steal their resources whenever I really get desperate though, so it's ok. Im worried that if I liberate, the military complexes I 'conquered' will stay little islands of territory in their nation…. Otherwise I'd really love to do that sometime in the 60 or 70s to simulate the younger generation pulling away with past policies and whatnot.
I also am a big fan of Korea; you guys have such a long and rich history and great culture—id love to teach there for a year after I get my certification. It has also been suggested by some of the professors and students here that I turn my honors projects on Korea's participation in the Vietnam War into a history book since I am a writer, but I'm undecided on that. What part of the country do you live in, I'm looking for suggestions on good cities to teach in.

Narrative (sorta, im speeding things up for a while to get through some domestic and economic stuff, so ill bullet point stuff mostly)

• April 1952: the United State officially enters the Vietnam War, sends several armored regiments to North Vietnam to assist UK forces struggling to hold the line ahead of the French Expeditionary Force's expected counter-attack, still days away in the Pacific. Recently deployed ROKAF Corsairs have destroyed enemy artillery emplacements in the Sector 4 battle area. The Capitol Tiger Division leaves Vietnam to refit with modern equipment, DPRK 1st Defense Division created with leftover old equipment, remains under ROK army command.

• Oct 1952: Our research centers are completed (2X) and the refitting of Tiger Division complete. Army Divisions will contain 3 brigades (2 infantry and 1 armored) and 1 HQ element broken down as follows:
o Infantry—10Xbren carriers, 4Xanti-tank units, 4Xartillery, 2Xrecon units; Armored—10Xamx tanks, 5Xbren carriers, 2Xanti tank units, 2Xrecon units; HQ—5Xbren carriers, 2Xanti tank units, 2Xrecon units, 6Xartillery, 2Xengineers. Construction and unit purchases underway to refit White Horse Division, expected completion date no later than Christmas of next year (hopefully sooner).

o Newly refurbished Tiger Division to redeploy to Sector 1 and systematically advance to the DMZ, seizing control of all Laotian and Cambodian territory West of the RVN DMZ area controlled by Blue Dragon Marines. This will allow White Horse Division to retreat and return home for refitting and modernization.

• November 52: The Saracen APC has replaced the Bren Carrier design as our active production model. All remaining Bren Carriers not in active service (tiger) will be transferred to ready-reserve status. Future units and refits will utilize the Saracen APC, possibly delaying White Horse's refitting.

• 21 Dec 1952 Tiger Division completes its redeployment to Vietnam. HQ and 1st Brigade, having arrived earlier that month, began combat operations in Laos north of the Cambodian border, with the eventual goal of linking up with 2nd Marine Division and replacing White Horse. Total Tiger Division strength, 14,000 troops (artillery and HQ unit included)

• JAN 16, AT RANDOM all my military units started heading to home, screwing up my formations, even the ones that were entrenched, near enemy lines, or low on fuel! All of a sudden, any command to entrench or move or anything is assumed to be a call to head home to Korea. All of these units are set for no minister controls now and everything… I have arty, inf, tanks, at, and recon strung out in enemy territory without supply trying to go home the shortest route.

• Figured out what was happening… as the territory I captured was returned to Laos, who is now independent, it kicked me out of it, because we have no treaties. You think they would be kind to me since I brought them back from the dead and all.

• 17 March 1953. White Horse Division, including it's armor, is heading home for refitting. Tiger is taking up their positions in central and northern RVN—HQ sets up in Da Nang (taking over for White Horse). In other news, domestic costs are soaring and once profitable industries are prohibitively expensive. Treasury plummets!
Here is the Vietnam casualty graph to date:

and heres the front-line as i left it... Army on the left, Marines on the right, and army HQ back at Da Nang.

Game notes
Didn’t expect to be on for a day or two, but the only COD 4 server I still play on banned me again for cheating after several maps as the number one guy with a 116+ kill to under 30 death KDR. Apparently the admin that used to vouch for me runs another server, and even the guys that liked me before have turned on me. So yea, not cheating incase you are wondering.

Also, bren carriers and pershings SUCK! I need to re-evaluate divisional structure for the army to factor in increased use of supply soon, and I don’t have the resources to form a ground based logistics unit in every division. I will either have one in reserve and one that can deploy and use the active one for the whole theater, or I will invest in air-resupply sooner than anticipated with choppers and transports ASAP. Also, I still need someone to recommend air and naval units, or anything, but air and naval especially, for my updating military. Oh, and AGRICULTURE is broken… most countries have 340,000,000+ surplus, most other countries have similar stories or cut production to meet demand… and agriculture takes 2X as much to produce as it is worth

Teaching Friday and working for tv this weekend, so I doubt ill have anything else this week, maybe one on Wednesday.

Narrative:
• June 1953: ROKFV commander Lee Jin-tae and Tiger Division commander Kim Bo Kyung have complained about the new Bren Carriers, insisting that the reduced number of men and supplies carried by each unit is detrimental to combat strength and ultimately is costing live and preventing ROK forces from mounting offensives. General Lee is insistent that the White Horse refit to the Saracen should be delayed and all Saracen APC units should be sent to Vietnam as soon as they are completed so Tiger can refit in the field. Head-General of the armed forces Chae Myung-shin declined. "Offensive operation will be limited to within a few miles of the border, easily within the capabilities of the Marines. White Horse will refit on schedule and replace Tiger Division in country. To make up for the loss of firepower, we will double our aerial presence with a fleet of Lightning fighters."

• Inferior military equipment continues to bare the blame for a rise in deaths in Vietnam per combat hour. One thousand casualties per month, despite a decrease in battles fought and a halting of offensive action at the DMZ.

• August 1953: Tech grant from England provides over 5 billion to spend on deeply discounted 30's and 40's tech. England also offers to supply several of the latest in prop driven ground attack planes. Germany unloads its oldest strategic bombers. The bombers are expected to deeply to Vietnam by December.

Heres those ground attack planes from England, (they look great, but im keeping them at home in case of China):
Image

• October. White Horse Division's refit is complete, fighting strength over 23,400 troops and artilleryman. Brigades will begin re-deployment shortly and all should be in country by Jan-Feb. Tiger division will pull back to Korea to refit as well once relieved. Tensions between our ally Israel and the neighboring nations grow. 7th Marine Brigade expeditionary force will activate and deploy to Israel by July of 1054.

• December 1953: ROK Air Forces have turned the tide and brought the battle into North Vietnam. While Tiger Division commanders can't wait to get off the line and turn in the failing Bren Carriers and M10 AT Units, the Marines continue to tough it out on the east side of the RVN. Both units are seeing great kill ratios and many victorious battles. French, British, Australian, and American forces routinely advance into North Vietnam, but fail to hold the ground they take. ROK Air Force pilots chase retreating enemy units deep into NVA territory, sometimes as far as Bien Son, only a short distance from Hanoi, and decimate the demoralized Chinese and Soviet formations.

Heres the current front line:
Image
The only impending changes come the new year are that everything "Tiger" becomes "White Horse" again and Tiger goes home. Then the 7th Marine Brigade Expeditionary Force heads to Israel, then the Tiger refit. Undecided if tiger will return to Vietnam, or if they will enter reserve status in Seoul. Eventually, I'll send an HQ unit to the Marines in Vietnam to free up that 2nd Brigade force thats holding down the fort in the rear. . . then maybe some offensives take place!

News from the home front:
With costs still rising, labor force down to 2.1 percent, and my power grid research continually paused (minister wont let it finish for some reason) the economy has its good and bad days. I ran at a 150% deficit, but it is usually more than made up in trade, except during long bouts of construction coupled with heavy fighting in Vietnam—like right now.

Technology should hopefully move forward if i stop manually adding anything... then maybe the minister will stop pausing my power grid upgrades already! by then i may also have access to helicopters, so ill need more fabrication places.

War Casualties (These numbers are getting pretty high):

Loving it so far. And yeah, I love my country. South Korea is the fastest growing economy in the world, and has a really deep history.
Glad to hear that you love Korea too ^_^. I'm just waiting on real life unification.

Re: Rise of The ROK

Been very busy with school and family and stuff... but heres the teaser for my last year of game time i just played today!

The soldiers in the field and public at home have been pressuring ROK Commanding General Chae Myung-shin to invade the north and end the seemingly endless conflict which has claimed over 30,000 Korean casualties already. In response, he has authorized ROKFV commander Lee Jin-tae to invade the north with all available forces, sending in the White Horse division to add nearly 18,000 combat troops to Vietnam. Commander Lee knows that invading in such a way would be a logistical nightmare his army is not built for, but continuing stalemate in a foreign land has lowered morale. Commander Lee pressed central command for logistical support, but no support was available.

Political pressure and declining morale forced Lee's hand and he invaded to disastrous consequences. Through sheer determination and toughness, ROK forces absorbed their heavy losses, regrouped, and prepared for the eventual final assault on the north--this time with some supply aircraft!

The situation economically has also worsened, with 75% of the treasury lost over the year and expenses growing...

April 1954:
The ROK's primary national concerns are the continuing modernization of the army/airforce, assisting the allies in operations in North Vietnam by holding the DMZ and bombing the north, deploying a peace observation force to Israel, closing the technological gap, and strengthening the economy. A lot of objectives and work to do to achieve them… what we really need the most are helicopters, they can be used as air support and logistical support options.

Un-unemployment continues to soar, as only 2% of the population is unemployed, hurting defense readiness and causing a rise in the cost of all goods and services while diminishing returns. Facilities have been forced to close due to lack of workers and the government has increased family subsidies to encourage rabbit-like breeding behaviors.

December 54
After months of pleading by field commanders, ROK central command authorized an invasion of the north. Tiger and the marines have advanced the line slowly but run into sever logistical problems, because we still have no supply units. White Horse is in reserve in the formerly Laotian territory west of Hue/DaNang. Our MEF unit is already in Israel, minus the AAA guns, and divided into an infantry, armored, and HQ unit. Because the helicopter research has been slow to come, ROK military head Chae Myung-shin has petitioned for the immediate ordering of foreign transport aircraft to assist forces in Vietnam. The government fears a lack of funds, as half the treasury has been depleted in the last two months alone. Budget shortfalls continue as trade revenues decline due to rising production costs.

On the night of the 29th, the under-supplied marines of Blue Dragon division suffered encirclement. Several thousand marines and army personnel involved in the rescue mission were killed, wounded, or remain missing after 48 hours of gruesome fighting. The 2nd Marine Division has been rendered incapable of performing offensive actions, as their armored brigade and 1st infantry brigade were nearly wiped out by combined soviet and Chinese forces south of Vihn. Immediately following this, a 10% tax to fund the acquisition of logistical air assets passed and the first two squadrons of transport aircraft were purchased from Australia and the UK.

February 1955:
Many tiger division troops were lost when they simply refused to retreat even though they were well supplied…. (stupid minister!)

March:
The first week of march brought renewed offensive action backed by logistical support aircraft. Our CAS aircraft had been badly beaten in round the clock operations to hold back the advancing enemy and buy time for our troops to retreat and re-group. Fresh fighters have been added to the CAS pool from the homeland just in time to invade the north anew.

After a week long battle, Tiger division captured Vihn with minimal casualties, while White Horse held the flak. Tiger is still in rough shape after the loss of most of its artillery and some infantry and recon troops from the initial enemy advance, but they soldier on. 2nd marine division has been reorganized into a single over-strength combat brigade and a headquarters unit until such time as they can return to Korea for refitting and re-enforcement. Their losses have been grievous.
The allies have pushed forward from the battle zone, resulting in the enemy retreating near Thanh Hoa.

Tiger Division HQ has moved up to Vihn and division commander Kim Bo Kyung is preparing to launch his assault. Meanwhile, the marines are planning to get back in the game and assault Viang Chan, while white horse maintains a defensive line between both units. Air bombardment of the area has been met with many NVA AAA guns, it appears they are digging in for a final stand. Luckily, French units manage to penetrate the lines ahead of the assault and neutralize the guns for us, before retreating to safety ahead of the soviet counter-attack.

The day before the planned assault, NVA forces retreated from Thanh Hoa, which was then occupied by the Australians. Tiger division moved in to secure the position as french forces advanced towards hanoi.

April:
The marines' advance was only lightly challenged, and White horse also managed to capture Xieng Khouang with little effort while extending the defensive line. French and Netherlands' forces pushed on Bien Son with ROK artillery support, but met stiff resistance from China and the NVA. The international force retreated before April third. A stalemate ensued, with the enemy well aware that their AAA shielded them from our mighty air power, but that we could not attack before combining our forces.

Our assault began on the 5th of April, with Kim Bo Kyung's Tiger Division leading the way. Enemy units melted like butter as each brigade leapfrogged the other in village-hopping once the enemy main line had been breached by combined US and ROK forces. Meanwhile, White Horse established a line outside Hoa Binh, not far from Hanoi. The 3 day long "airquake" operation pummeled retreating enemy forces to the point where dozens of units were destroyed, and enemy reserves and units in need of repair activated in Hai Phong. The Last Stand of the enemy approaches.

Blue Dragon marines prepared to cross the river and attack Hanoi from the west, where they were defenseless. At the same time, American and French forces hit from the east, passing the line of White Horse and using the ROK artillery for cover. The battle lasted two days, but the allied army took Hanoi just before the marines finished crossing. The marines instead decided to push on to Yen Bai, across the next river, then cross another river to hit the capitol, Thai Nguyen. The marine armor, which is not amphibious, defended Hanoi with the allies. The NVA set a trap at the river at Yen Bai, encircling the marines, who suffered large casualties for a second time in less than six months. The air force responded despite heavy AAA fire and also sustained heavy casualties.

By the end of april, the ROK launched the final assault on the capitol, viet tri, and hai phong. Tiger would take Hai Phong, the largest concentration of enemy forces, and White Horse would secure the other two towns. US and French forces assisted in filling gaps in the line. The airforce was too badly damaged from operations with the marines to participate.

With ROK forces encircling the city, pouring fire down on the defenders, british assault forces captured the enemy capitol in on 28 April 1955. Hai phong fell the next day to Tiger Division's armored brigade. On the 2nd of may, just prior to what would have been the total annihilation of over 2 dozen soviet, east german, and Chinese units encircled at Campha, the NVA and its allies capitulated.

and thats only one of two stacks

Here is the final casualty table of the war:

Over the next 5 years we hope to slowly modernize and refit the military force, repairing the damage done to the marines along the way. The technology gap and economic slowdown needs to be fixed as well.

Nice work in Vietnam. Not sure what you're up to in Israel though...
