an osprey crashed last month in morocco due to technical issues. This brings the total amount to 6 such crashes in about 20 years.Four of which were during its development and testing.

Don't forget the sale to Japan is now in question. Aswell as the Japanese allowing the US to operate the Osprey over and from Japan.

Yea, i saw that. But japan would be incredibly stupid to let a few crashes get in the way of owning these. They really needed, and thanked the US for the air units that helped out during their recent disasters. These would make them far less dependent on the us units in such cases.

The base ? Thats one of the largest cluster ..... going. Not enough space on the forum to delve into that sufficiently.Shame we dont just build an artificial island nearby, and use that instead.

An odd story is starting to filter about, how the same pilot was involved in 2 of 3,if not 3 of 3,of the last 3 osprey crashes.

Going back to the first of the last 3,the report cited pilot error as a major contributer to the crash.Going forward to the latest of the three, and its being said pilot error again, was a huge part of the incident.

This latest claim, isnt official yet.But word is the pilot flew the osprey into the no fly window behind another osprey. This is an area where the wash from one osprey, can overwhelm a second osprey behind it.Think "Wake Turbulence".

I was actually thinking about the Osprey the other day, I wondered why they didn't bother going for a modern version of the Fairey Rotordyne, which worked exceptionally well, I am suprised nobody has thought to make it given how it has the advantages of the Osprey with a lot less of its flaws.

The morocco crash info is now available.Pilot error also.

The investigation and black box show 2 serious errors caused the crash.

The first one was the pilot dipping the nose by circa 10 degrees more than he should have. This would likely have been recoverable, had not the second error also had a large impact on the event.

The second error was an "unawareness" and or "failure to take into account" a strong tail wind the aircrafts sensors detected and displayed. This tail wind acted on the rear stabilizer to create lift under it,making pulling the nose of the aircraft back up much more difficult.

They will probably be purchased for the Israelis by Germany or the US.

To bad the US forced Germany's Donier Do-31's cancellation in the late 1960's, though it was jet powered tilt-pod and not tilt-rotor.

Some information finally on the gun issue.the osprey is getting a remote controlled 7.62 mm mini-gun belly gun, with a 360 firing arc.The gun is said to be pretty high tech.

Took some effort, but i was able to get a pic.

From what I've heard from people actually using it, their a pain in the ass. The Air Force uses the CV-22 and the operators aren't too thrilled with it, since it has a greater prop wash and makes repeling down from it harder. I've also heard you need special equipment when your trying to mount a sling load since the engines in hover mode send their exaugs directly downward on the people trying to hook the load up, which gets complicated when your working in 120 degree weather.

From an operational level standpoint/people not directly using it, its a great tool since you have greater flexibilty with assets and your combat reach is increased without the need for extra support assets like tankers or forward refueling bases.

That gun mount lends no support when loading from a hover.

The downdraft is indeed an issue. Its an even bigger one for ship resupply

I dont see why the gun would be an issue
