So I was looking on the steam forums yesterday becouse I wanted to get some info on Skyrim, however they had it posted as being down for routine maintence. It was down for over two hours when I stoped checking on it which I thought odd for it being down that long. Now today when I went to go check it out I see this post

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

So the forums are still down. However unlike the PS3 problems earlier this year you are still able to play games.

Ya it can happen to any company. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Anytime you have a large user base your a prime target. Steams database has got to be a treasure trove of credit card numbers emails etc.. everything the unsavory elements on the internet want.

If people can engineer security, someone can reverse engineer it.

If they really want something, it is but a matter of time.

i'm not too worried, it seems the hackers didn't managed to crack the cryptation of the password and credit card database.

Im not bothered either. The card I use for Steam is a debit card, not a credit card, and I make sure there is never any additional funds in there anyways. I started doing this after the playstation hack, as an added measure of security.
If there is no cash in there, they cant do much...

Well, ok, well, goodthing steam has my old bank card info then
