Or about $45,250 per US residence.
This really shows how far we are in debt and how staggering the numbers really are. I think these numbers are so high only long term or drastic measures will be able to solve it. To me it looks as if we are just playing along till the system collapses. It would be nice if our leaders came up with some sort of 100 year plan. Becouse really its going to take that long to clean this debt off.

I would say stoping the Afghan/Iraq war would save up to 140-160 billions annully, plus taking 500-580billion(leaving about 100-190billions left, and still the worlds largest budget) from the US military/DoD annully would go a long way of cutting down on the 1,3(2010) trillion $ defict. Taking 200 billions from Medicare, 200-250 billions from social security, increasing taxes, would also help, plus cut discretionary spending by 160-250. This would cut down the defict by 1100-1280 billions, plus get some more tax revenews. Plus with a significant cut down on the military budget, US could sell some military hardware plus get sell other property to maybe get a trillion or two, so that the credit ratings ease and US would not have to pay as much credit. Also scraping some largescale reserach projects could help slighly.

This would be a very harsh plan and it still might not save the US. Most Americans would probobly not like this and it would be a loss of face, but I say loss of face is better bankcruptcy/loss of SuperPower title/crippling of economy.

EDIT: the Defict is estimated to reach 1,6billion :-(

Cant cut military spending. We will need the military to plunder other nations when our economy collapses.

That would be a good way to spend the money. Make some private research labs and pay the best scientists to research cures for diseases and other things good for humanity.

Yeah yeah... I realized I was off by a factor of 1,000 after I had gone back to work. I still made my point... "The money does not just magically appear."

@Hullu - Well, at least you spread the pain around. Maybe I'm going senile, but I could swear I remember a time you would have stopped after slashing the Military budget.

Another thing that might help erase the deficit? Get rid of the 120,000 page Tax code. Flat tax, eliminate loopholes, make the bottom 45% of the country pay something (everyone should have "skin in the game"). Make this a Constitutional amendment and get Uncle Sam the hell out of the way, and the Lobbyists the hell out of Washington. (at least most of them)

Half our problem is that our own Federal Government is crippling our very own economy for it's own partisan power grabs and special interest bribery.

Dear god... maybe you should read about how a few percent of the USA(and the world) has enough income and assets to buy the rest...I'm too tired to look up but it has to be on the net.

Also, flat tax is dumb. Make it slightly progressive like just a few percent more for rich, if not out of practicality then out of principle. The rich people will ALWAYS have ways to avoid taxation, influence people, lobbying for less work regulations and make more money by just having more money. The regular human is evil and selfish (not even you can deny that), and by tightening the regulation and taxation around individuals with more power it would do well to remind them that they are mightier, and thus with more responsibility.

Life isnt equal in giving, why should it be equal in taking?

Pleasd don't start a flaming war, by calling a senile man's idea dumb could cause him think you imply he's dumb. That could be provocous.

I think i provoked by using the word senile, sorry for that, just had to :p. But the point is still there, though without senile part.

LOL Only old to you "wet behind the ears", idealistic, whippersnappers. I wasn't suggesting a pure flat tax. Maybe 3 rates. Up to 100K =10%. Up to a Million =15%. Over that 20-25%. Something like that. Yeah, soak the "rich" and corporations for 20-25%, but make the burgerflippers and such pay something. 8% 10%. The main point is to remove the loopholes and tax breaks and the opportunity for special interest groups and large corporations to cut deals with legislators. The wealthy end up paying the same or more, and having much less influence. On the flipside, the government ends up with much less ability to meddle in the economy. Win/Win.

That is also what I think. However, I disagree that loopholes would be discouraged by merely removing tax rates. Also shrinking the state is nowadays a near impossibility, not that I dont want it. Good luck with it.

Also, I really would like to know by what miracle a legislation would limit the wealthy from influencing the state.

Polotics for you. Corruption comes natural with ones who deal with the money. Its easy to write off a few thousand dollars, toilet seats worth 25k, new hammers that are 10k, though they not that much.
