...approved Wednesday a law criminalizing strikes and protests with penalties of up to one year's imprisonment, state media reported.
A gag order has also been placed on Egyptian media, which has done very little reporting of the military's transgressions.

actually that is not completely accurate, this law criminalize protests that hampers the production & it is set to be void after the ending of the military law in 6 month ,since it is tied to the emergency law & it aims at helping the stock market & it did & the vast majority supports it .although i don't support it but i do understand its necessity

A police state barely three months ago, Egypt has seen crime soar 200 percent since Hosni Mubarak's ouster from the presidency. Murder, violent theft and kidnapping are leading the surge, security officials said.

...then again, not much difference on this....in fact, as the article noted, you might say behavior over soccer has improved a tad since before...
This time cooler heads prevailed; that is, they waited for the game itself to resume hostilities.
though i think they got the nationality wrong on the team Club Africain ,which appears to be tunisian. Its being said though, that a ref involved was algerian....

Salafis have forced the closure of four cafes that serve alcohol. They also set fire to four Christian homes in a Fayoum village
Salafis have also threatened to destroy some of the most revered shrines in Cairo
But Egypt's top mainstream cleric, the grand sheik of Cairo's Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's foremost seat of learning, warned the shrine threats could lead to violence between Muslims."Blood will be knee-deep,"

It is late, and I don't have the energy to reread this whole thread. Has anyone mentioned the possibility that this whole region-wide movement is a gambit set in motion, or at least being co-opted by Islamists? I am not talking about individual situations like Egypt. I'm talking the whole ball of wax.

islamists already control syria and iran. Those two alone break any whole region line of thought.

And though the media doesnt like to say so for some reason, the iranian protests came before the tunisian protests.

Many of those protesting in syria are kurdish.Turkey recently disallowed, then re-allowed several pro-Kurdish politicians from the coming elections. What got turkey to change it mind ? Could have been the large riots that followed the original decision.

In addition to those pro-kurdish politicians, there was something like 35 kurdish politicians arrested. The claim is they have ties to the kurdish terror group, and at least some likely do.

If the kurds come out ahead in syria, its very likely things will get hotter in turkey. The press isnt covering them very much, but theres been more than a few protests against turkeys islamist government also this year.

Egypt continues it slide into an even bigger sectarian hellhole. From the christian governor removed from office because muslims insisted on having a muslim governor,to the ever increasing religious based attacks as yet another mob of Islamic extremists attacked christian churchs resulting in many dead and wounded.

Which led to both sides attacking each other with rocks, molotovs, and guns.Multiple churches were torched,as was an apartment building in which christians lived.

The army anounced circa 190 arrests, and is threatening an 'Iron Handed' response including use of anti-terror laws, many of which made up the old emergency laws. But they are very vocal in saying "this isnt a return to emergency law".

And these latest attacks by islamists on christians ? Brought on by a rumor now proven false .

yup, more protests and attacks in egypt.

BUT a more interesting thing occured in syria today.Or might have occurred, though the evidence is pretty solid, its not confirmed yet.An army outpost along the lebanese-syrian border came under attack today and appears to have lost.the attackers are said to be the syrian army itself,or rather defectors from it.

No word of the toll on the syrian border side of this battle, but there were some wounded on the lebanese border side from stray fire.Theres also a small but steady stream of syrian soldiers crossing into lebanon at this border location, who say they have deserted and or defected.

And here comes the food crisis....
Egypt has only about 4 months of wheat,1 month of rice, and is already short on poultry, meat, and cooking oil.And the nation doesnt have the money to keep the required supplies coming in.And not only cant the nation afford to buy food, the population cant either.Rice (price of) for example has gone up 35% this year so far.

MID the upheavals in Egypt since January, reports have begun to emerge of a surge in disappearances of Coptic girls. One priest in Cairo estimates that at least 21 young girls, many as young as 14, have disappeared from his parish alone. In most cases, when a Christian girl who disappears is found by her family, she has been converted to Islam and married.

Egypt arrests iranian diplomat of spying,is set to be deported in days.

New protests by the egyptian groups based on youth and or secularism, show with very disappointing numbers. The religious oriented groups (represented mainly by the muslim brotherhood )not only did not participate, but are now saying the groups that did participate are "attempting to drive a wedge between the military and the people, and argued nobody should go out against the Army which played an instrumental role in making the 25 January revolution a success" .
