Boeing’s spyplane development wing won an $89 million contract this week to build the SolarEagle unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, designed to fly continuously for five years at 65,000 feet.

As the winner of Darpa’s Vulture II program, the plane really only has to fly for one to three months by 2014, however.

But NASA and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are teaming up to in hopes of making the idea of long-term space flight a reality. The two agencies announced the "100-Year Starship" study on Thursday.

I am all for studing long term space flight. Allot of cool tech can come out of that. But why place the 100 years on it? it just makes it seem, well stupid. Of course that might be there goal here. You announce somthing really stupid, And then somone thinks on it and figures out if you change such and such that might be a really good idea.

Also I am all for thinking out of the box. That is where some of the best idea's come from. But of course the worst come from there too. And somtimes stuff found outside needs to stay outside.

A flying jeep, C'mon The only practicality to that would be avoiding IED's and rough terrian. And if you really really wanted somthing like that. it would be far easier to just have those old jeeps that are fairly light. And then use black hawks to lift them around. Or just skip the jeep and take the black hawk where ever you need togo. Rather difficult to put an IED in the air on target.

Its based on 100 years, because thats the high end of how long they expect it to take to reach its destination.Its a one way trip.The astronauts are expected to live their lives out on that ship.The Goal ,to show man can survive on space ships for the period of time now considered required to reach other (desired) planets,so that habitation on those planets can then be planned out.

If man cant stay sane and fit, both serious challenges for long term space travel,he cant move to the next step of setting up permanent habitations out there.
