BRIC: The Brazil-China aircraft carrier agreement

Post by Galindo »

Well I just heard of this at the weekend and it made me think, what if?
At first all this BRIC thing sounded more like media speculation to me, besides a few meeting and some agreements it was all very vague and I also never thought that this could work.
For one Brazil is the weakest, besides good promisses for the future and a very good diplomacy we would be more like a little brother since we can't cope with China's economy or Russia's military. No WMD and no intention of ever getting one(thank god).
But what really makes me doubt this "alliance" isn't Brazil.
Could China, Russia and India put their differences behind? I mean really forget all their territorial problemems and cultural diferences?
I don't know but things are happening this is just one of the many social, economic and military agreements that are beeing made between them.
So my questions are: Can this realy work? What do you think about it? Good, bad? A New World Order? A threat to Nato?
please let me know what you think.

Throwing in their lot with China is all bad in my probably biased opinion. I'd rather see Brazil become an ally of the US, along with India, against a growing Chinese/Russian threat.

There is alot of open source material regarding Brazil's outstretched hands to Turkey, Iran, India, China, Russia, South Africa...the list goes on. I do not believe Brazil has any intention of improving diplomacy with the US or NATO.

Brazil is probably a little brother in comparison, but its military diplomacy for research, construction, etc of military equipment is on a steady increase with the above named countries. Additionally, look at the strategic importance of such ties for all countries involved in these talks.

Interesting, yes?

Brazil and China doesn't make sense, America and Brazil makes sense, isn't Brazil allied with France?

Anyways I see Brazil and the Superpower of South America and maybe Africa in the near future.

I can understand Brazil keeping the U.S. and Europe at arm's length. Europe like a son wanting to make it on his own without any help from Dad. America is a bit more complicated, but if I were Brazil, I would want to shine in the Western hemisphere without the shadow of the U.S. hovering over me. Just my anthropomorphic take on things...

Thanks for all the feedback I think the idea is pretty much spread the horizons and depend less on specific regions and I don't know but maybe there's an aspiration for becoming a neutral superppower.

Brazil's has been steadily working towards arms agreement, military diplomacy if you will, with African regions (thanks BG, I can't even call them countries any longer!), China, Russia, Turkey, Iran, and others. Brazil continues to insert itself into the nuclear issues surrounding Iran and a few others as well as bi-lateral agreements on many other issues with Iran and other such regions.

As for Brazil's stance either for or against the US...I believe Brazil is trying to set a precedence in that it is the S.American "superpower"; however, it cannot do it alone for whatever number of reasons. Its disputes with the US are getting longer though in regards to counterdrug, diplomacy, etc so as that side of the scale lengthens then it naturally is closing the gap between itself and those who could influence US decisions.

I have some open source sites that I will peruse and see what tidbits I can find to share with you all.

I'm not realy aware of any military agreement between Brazil and african coutries besides South Africa, there's a natural link with african coutries mainly luso-african 'cause of the strong African roots and some similiarities with the realities but Brazilian influence is nothing compared to the Russian and Chinese influence in the region(as far as I know). Iran is in any way a important partner of Brazil before this new agreements there were almost none trade between then, All I know is that Brazil keeps Its position of not signing any new protocol of the Non-Proliferation Treaty(a big joke in my opnion) and that every country has the right to use the nuclear energy for pacific purposes. Dunno of anything in special with Turkey also besides the mediations with Iran.
Mostly of what I know comes from Brazilian media so more info is always usefeul, please share ;)
