My understanding is that the programming controlling the intercept is completely different for that of a missile intercept vs a satellite intercept.

We know that the sm-3 had to have a new software package for the missile and the control , as well as enhanced targeting radars, applied for its shootdown.

The "divert system" was in fact in at least its 3rd incarnation,the first two at least,having failed to function properly.

So no,simply becuase its purpose is to shot down B.M., doesnt mean it can handle this job.

And keep in mind,by the way.No one has said yet there will even be a shootdown.
This is simply a chance for the russians to do so ,while drawing less criticism due to the chinese and the americans having already done so in cases of their own satellites.

If not a free shot, its at least a opportunity with a built in consequence lessener for Russia to do so...should they choose to...
