How do I make colonialism work?
Hey all, so I am in the 1936 scenario as Japan, I have allied China and Thailand and colonized the rest of East Asia up to Afghanistan. I am in 1956 now and I am running into serious problems with some of my colonies. I have tried to ensure that they have a surplus of all profitable materials by building factories and such in their land and regularly checking their economic numbers. However, while everything was going well for a while, now most of my colonies seem to be rapidly losing money, suggesting that perhaps I over developed them. Since I can't demolish buildings in colonies, what should I do? I don't even really understand the problem, if they have a surplus of valuable commodities shouldn't they be making money? I am struggling most with Malaya, Ceylon, Bangladesh, and Manchukuo at the moment. Manchukuo was my wealthiest colony for a time, but now it appears they are headed for a total economic collapse. There is also the issue of India, which I haven't even touched yet since I think developing them would be far too expensive.

I suspect the rule that forces colonies to send "surplus" resources to the parent leaves them with nothing to sell on the world market and no way to make money. I am not clear on what the code determines for surplus.
I think you have 2 options.
1. Liberate the colony
2. Annex the colony
If you liberate they are on their own, if you annex, you can then delete or build what you think that area needs. Once you are satisfied, release them. You will need to reconquer if you want the colony again.

Colonies send you the surplus....so, in my game, I send back "cash".

I understand, I also "subsidize" colonies. I was addressing the underlying cause of "why" we have to subsidize.

Usually after a few years i release them, but some regions seem to keep up well. Just keep in mind you dont rly want to "develop" the colony, that usually goed bad on the long term. Airbases and supply depots are usefull for you but much less for a colony since they send you the surplus.

I think it would be nice to have a slider to select the percentage of the surplus we would like to have from the colonies. Kind of like in the resources tab and ofc with negative effects the higher the percentage is.
