Anti-missile measures

Post by Kristijonas »

What are the best anti-missile measures that can be used to defend against nuclear threats?
Are air defense sites/laser defense sites any good? If so, which is better? Anyone tested either of these sites against missiles? How was it?

Do you use anti-air units for missile defense? On paper I see that SA-20 S-400 Triumf is the best with 16 attack in 200km range. Next behind it, with 4 attack in 245km range is MIM-212 THAAD-II. S-500 is only 2 attack with 260km range. Is the S-400 really that good in this game? Anyone tested it against missiles? Any idea why S-500 is worse on all accounts (except range) than the S-400 ? Is it a bug? Both systems are meant primarily for missile interception so it is doubtful the new system, S-500, will be 8 times less powerful?

The best antimissile measure is defense satellite network.

AA units need much micro tactical management and are not so effective as AA sites and general units that fight through AI.

I was wondering, how does the anti-missile satellite network work??

As for AA units needing micromanagement to be effecti anti-missile I think it's untrue because they shoot missiles passively. All you have to do is station your AA units on the path of a missile. Some AA units have range of up to 280km so they cover quite a large area of land. A stack of several powerful anti-missile AA units should take care of most missiles I think.

If I'm not mistaken, there is no "defense satellite network" in SRU...that was in SR2020

I thought there was still MDI? But its a really high level tech regardless and I think only countered "high" level targets and not regular missiles. You'll get access to THAAD and S-400 a lot earlier and are probably better off with them despite there 200km range. (or some of the ships too which have high level attack) You'll just have to pick what you want to defend and maybe consider air defence sites too.

Big missile launchers units are slow and vulnerable. Incoming missiles I face usually when attacking and when the battle runs fast I have some difficulties to use them in the heat of the battle.

I remember playing Ruges mod for SR2020 in which he made missiles hugely overpowered and I battled that with stacks (7 units in a hex) of AA units like 5x S-400 combined with 2x close range AA units that have very high close attack and response time. The biggest issue when advancing my forces was the necessity to wait for supply to catch up so the AA units could replenish their ammo...

There was one unit that was particularly good because it had good response time for capital AA unit which most have "Low", I believe it was SA-12a Gladiator

There are Missile Defense satellites in SRU also. :)

This requires battles to be played very slow and carefully. Usually I keep AA and artillery units isolated on islands and I play the rest war with tanks and infantry.

I will keep stacks of supply trucks with my AA and Arty. One stack of truck can keep several stacks of AA or Arty supplied.

But you can't build them, can you?...its just a tech IIRC

I have 22 orbiting Earth. You can build all three satellites in SRU, Communication, Recon, and Missile Defense.

I am not sure. My understanding is they will attack ICBMs which generally go into sub orbital altitude. In game this is missiles (ICBMs) with a "High Air Target" profile. The MDI will intercept the ICBM while it is up there. The manual has this;

"Missile Defense Satellites - These will only have an impact when under strategic attack. A certain portion of incoming missiles can be intercepted. Higher coverage will mean greater protection."

The reason I do not have a better understanding of them is simple; They only work on ICBMs. Generally the ai does not launch ICBMs. I vaguely remember it happening to me once in SR2020, it might have been in a AAR. I have never had it happen in SRU.

EDIT:
I found the only time I have seen the MDI work, as far as I can remember; This was in 2008.

They removed the satellites when transiting from SR2020 to SRCW and I never again remembered to look again when they released SRU... [_]O

Though, I only used Communication and Reconnaissance satellites in SR2020
