Silver star next to Experience? what does it mean?

2) Bonus question #2, dating back to SR2020, when do ships use infantry or hard attack if they can only bombard the coastline? My guess is, depending on what they're bombarding, right? if it's a city, it uses infrastructure rating and so on...

I believe after you gain so much experience you gain a star. I have seen some of my units with two stars after several battles.

What I would like to know though is in what ways does it affect the unit in terms of bonuses. Is there a certain percentage that it increases attack,defense, combat time values. Example one star = +10%bonus, 2 stars 20%? And how many stars can a unit gain?

If you hold over the star, it shows you how much experience the units has and how many kills. The color changes as it gets more experience.

I don't have hard numbers on how much experience gives how much benefit but it has a significant bonus in combat.

Does the experience degrade over time or when losses are replaced?

not over time, but yes as repaired (IIRC)
