Perhaps start by editing textures from the main game (if BG allows it) and if available to use for free try photos of real objects. Even texture parts from other mods` artworks (permission allowing) could be a good start before you can figure out what you want to do by yourself.
Hard as getting the model done withing the limits of the game clearly is, the final good looking of the unit will probably depend alot on the texture since it needs to compensate for the fewer poly used. That said, I encourage you not to give up. You`ve clearly made good progress in a short while.

I figured I might as well just take the hard route and learn to texture, even if it takes a few attempts to do on this, I think it'll be worth the experience.

Very true. As small as units are and the lack of poly count means meshes just need the general shape and the texture does most of the work. The locked topdown to 3 quarter view angle further supports this.(IE the undersides can be completely ignored in most circumstances, and shading etc and can be placed in the texture for these viewing angles)

Thats the best way to go since given the facts I pointed out above.. you could probably do alot more just creating new textures on old meshes than to worry about creating totally new meshes. Unless a unit design has a completely unique profile re-texturing the existing meshes generally works fine. Not to mention new meshes will rely more on textures than on the actual mesh for final appearance given the small poly count and unit size in game.

I have decided to keep doing the meshes too as I want to get in some experience as I plan to eventually start modding for Arma 3, once I feel confident with making them for SR, but will keep making some SR models on the side.

Well, I got sent away by the company I work for on fairly short notice, so didn't have any chance to copy over my UV to do the texturing whilst I was away. The Firefly is unrapped now, and the unrap went a lot better then it did before thanks to the experience gained on the test model.

Anyway, I decided to start on another model whilst I was away so hopefully it will be pretty much ready to be unrapped when I get back on Thursday (Bear in mind, I started this Sunday night):

Feel free to have a guess :D

Arma 3 is a pretty good sim. I was intro'd into the series with the DayZ mod for Arma 2.

Tried getting it into blender but the results are never what I call good, so I am going to go and learn how to make them from scratch in blender. Suppose it'll help when it comes to Arma 3 too to learn it.

Well I got the basic feeling for Blender on Sunday, but haven't done much else besides that since I have been quite time restricted due to my job being quite hectic at the moment. Was planning on doing some whilst away this week but it ended up being called off :( If I get time to do some, I will post up a few more picy's than I have in the past.

There are several good reasons for that :D :D :D, and one of them isn't that I have given up, because I aint.

-Using Google Sketchup has proven a huge waste of time as far as I am concerned. Without the Pro exporters (£500), it is pretty dodgy on export to blender and then out to the game. So, as you can guess, I ended up binning what I had done so far (the Firefly and the Nelson).

-I am now using Blender but have never used it before except for exporting and UVing, and so I have had to learn how to make them. And I have had to make the models from scratch. I am working on the Firefly but it is only about 10% done at the moment as my time has been eaten up by work. I have been following a set of pretty good tutorials which have helped me along somewhat.

-Work has been sending me around the country and when I am not travelling, I have been doing quite long hours (compounded by 1.5 hour travel time each way), and so I have had little time (and energy) to do the modelling, and have been trying to get some gaming in during my free time.

But be reassured, I haven't given up on this, and don't intend to. Got no pictures I want to show you guys yet so you'll just have to wait until I'm ready to show you something.

I know its been a long time and most of you probably have thought that the project has died, but i've been learning how to use blender and carry out most of the processes that are needed. The Firefly isn't quite done yet but I don't think it is very far off being ready to put into the game. Please share your thoughts (I know the glass needs framing).

GJ.
Just a reminder.. the Mesh is small enough in game you can use the texture to fake a lot. So I wouldn't worry about some of the smaller details (you could easily fake the framed glass via texture for example)

Of course modelling for arma is going to be less forgiving.. and require alot more polys...
