Naval Fabrication facilities on River & Coastal Hexes

#1 Post by geminif4ucorsair » Feb 13 2014

There is, with the continued 16-km scale p/Hex, a need to allow construction of at least Naval Fabrication facilities on hexes that have both
water and land, in particular, coastal and river hexes.

Some of the best examples is the need for facilities in the USSR near Nikolaev (Nikolayev) and several other locations worldwide.

The real world finds shipbuilding firms location on rivers and coastal hexes, why should SR- be designed so that those hexes become un-usable?

In addition, seaplane builders all have their heritage plants either on coastal hexes (Consolidated, San Diego; Boeing, Renton on Lake Washington) - and even the Russian Taganrog (Black Sea) and Leningrad (Baltic Sea) locations - in the latter case, both aircraft and shipbuilding.

BG - can you explain why this hexes are not available ? - the game sure needs more accurate locations for a lot of shipyards (in particular), especially because some rivers are also 'closed' in the game (Bug River, southern Ukraine, flowing into the Black Sea).

You have misunderstood the mechanic. There are no hexes in the game that are both water and land. They are only one type. Use <Ctrl+T> in game to see the terrain types visually.

Naval Fabrication goes where there are military complexes and ports. We can place military complexes on land next to deep rivers or next to water. Boats can enter/exit land hexes that have a port

If you give x,y coordinates of your examples I can look at these more closely.

I don't misunderstand the mechanics of where various types of difference btw Wide Rivers, Narrow Rivers, Sea Ports and Sea Piers etc....it comes down to the graphics (map) presentation.

For example: Hex X1003 Y 171 is defined as a River Wide;
Hex X1006 Y173 is defined as a River Wide......
yet, both have half the hex occupied by what appears to be Land and one cannot build on those hexes.

Hex 1581 Y191 is defined as Ocean - logically one cannot build on the ocean - but half the hex is land terrain.

River Wide hexes - when showing half the hex as land - should be available to build shipyards, sea port, etc. on them.

Again, it also comes down to graphics too. A hex that is defined as Ocean, should have no land showing. (Hex X1581 Y191).

You are correct, you cannot build on rivers. We have already indicated our desire to "Improve coastlines". You're seeing some satellite imagery because a world map doesn't fit nicely into a hex grid.

This is where you misunderstand the mechanic. It may "look" like there is land there, but there isn't. The map has been specifically defined to say that there is no land there. It's all ocean. This is what makes "cleaning up the coastlines" a higher priority, to reduce this confusion. A hex and can only be one type.

Only possible if the world was actually a hex grid. Look at the island north of 759, 052 to the right of Iceland. How would you suggest we define those hexes? Or 1168, 354?

Maybe create a new type of hex. Like : island. So ships can pass, but at the same time you can build certain buildings. I don't mean like fabrication buildings, but maybe airstrips, piers, radar, bridges etc.
