SR-36 / SRU - Dornier Do-215 suggested changes

Post by geminif4ucorsair »

Several changes are recommended for the Dornier Do-215 bomber - based both on SR-36 and SRU games,
as below.

* * Region: Europe (SRU)

* * UNIT: Do-215

Countries:
Germany (as current)

ADD -
* Yugoslavia
* Romania
* The Netherlands
* Sweden

Region: Northern Europe (SR-36)
* Sweden

* * Designation Change: change to: Do-215A

* * Production Year: change to: 1941

This denotes the export-planned version, for those countries listed above under "ADD".

* * Background.

The Do-215 was envisioned as a exportable version of late versions of the Do-17, then in-production.
The prototype first flew in autumn 1939 and were not considered but Mehrzwerke-Vorfusrungsmaschine , o.e. 'multi-purpose demonstrator machine. There were in effect, no true prototypes built of the design. The design different mostly in having a deeper forward fuselage, or flight deck/navigation area.

Export success was immediate. The Yugoslavian government, already building its version of the Do-17K. No decision had been reached on whether Yugoslav-buiilt Gnome-Rhone 14K or Bramo 323 engines would be used.
Yugoslavia asked for delivery of 20 aircraft, as part of a multi-aircraft contract in late-October 1939. The German-Hungarian invasion of Yugoslavia terminated any prospect prior to 1941, of the Do-215 by Belgrade.

Further export orders were in hand and production plans existed with Sweden, Romania, and The Netherlands.
Other export discussion and reasonable prospects for sale were also with Greece, Switzerland and Bulgaria. The Swiss aircraft would likely have been thru Dornier's Swiss company, Doflug, in Altenrhein.

Bulgaria wanted to acquire ten aircraft, but not until 1942 was a formal request made to buy a dozen aircraft.

Romania made a formal request in December 1939 for 30 aircraft, to be fitted with DB 601 Aa engines (but without cold start equipment). The aircraft would have been designated Do 215 Ar, but like Yugoslavia, Germany would make no deliveries (during the war, as an ally, Romania did receive 12 x Ju-88D-1 reconnaissance aircraft).

A Swedish contract for 12 Do-215A aircraft was signed on 30 December 1939, also fitted with DB 601Aa engines. Dutch interest came both from MD (air force) and MLD (naval aviation service), and an initial order of 18 aircraft was concluded 10Jun1939.

Yugoslavian, Romanian, Swedish, and Dutch aircraft were under production at the beginning of Operation Fall Gelb in May 1940; thus none were delivered; Russia also paid for two Do-216B-3 aircraft, on 27Jun1940.

Except or Bulgaria, where the aircraft industry was at its infancy in 1940, the other countries had a fair prospect of domestic manufacturing of the Do-215A, and that is why my suggestion they be included in production options for the above listed countries. Production could not begun until 1941, due to the state of each countries aircraft industry and existing orders.
