CERN and ITER

Post by Kristijonas »

I think CERN should really be reflected in the game. It is the single largest research facility on earth both in physical proportions and budget. It is located in the suburbs of Geneve, Switzerland. It could be placed in the city itself (how do I check the coordinates? It simply states "Geneve" where coordinates of empty hexes would be) or nearby at X858 Y174.
If it were Switzerland's facility alone, I'd even advice building 6 research facilities in one hex :D But it's an international one, so one would do just nice. A business sector building could also be placed there to simulate all the billions flowing from the other EU states in this project.

As a side note for Switzerland: It only has business sector buildings in 2020. I think it should have them in all other periods. It is a large financial center of Europe for at least a hundred years.

Another half-life'esque mega-project of science, "ITER" (at about X860 Y188):

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scien ... 90480.html
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/8c00ac50-7157 ... abdc0.html

Possibly also worth adding to the map?

Pros to representing ITER and CERN in game:
- These projects are huge!
- These projects happened in these particular countries, because they were scientifically advanced enough to start such projects and that should be reflected in the game.
- It's a huge flow of money

Cons:
- They are international projects, so it would be somewhat unfair to give a bonus only to the country where the project actually takes place.
- These projects are very focused and while there were many "collateral" scientific discoveries made while building these projects, their goals remain singular so they are not research facilities that could be used to directly create military designs, for example.

Has it been considered perhaps? As of 9.0.42, no change.

Is it still possible this may appear in game?

A third suggestion if the BG team would like to add something unique - a research facility on (under) the water!
NEPTUNE - largest undersea observatory. Just off the shores of Canada. If it does not seem enough to warrant a research facility it is important to remember Canada also has another ocean project going: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VENUS

The Neptune and Venus projects are rather interesting, but they are pretty small-scale, so I don't think they really have a point as an on-map element in the game.

CERN and ITER are quite gigantic, on the other hand, and so we're looking at adding them in some way with the next update, if only as research centres of some sort, although it's not really possible to simulate the "multi-national" nature of these facilities.
