Finnish Army and Militia

Post by Hullu Hevonen »

In-game Finnish army total strength is ~137,800, in reality Finland had an mobilisation strength of 315,000(1934, kept increasing every year), including reserves, Militia, garrisons, standing army etc.
Finland had in 1936 roughly 100,000 suojeluskunta militia at arms, which had relativaly good training and where volunteers, which also where the victors of the Civil War earlier. These where also among the first at to respond when war broke out in 1939, then numbering already 120,000. Of these ~50,000 where sent to the frontlines(of which already a large part was stationed when the war broke), the rest where 'garrisoned' around the country or on training mission to train new recruits. This is excluding the 'regular' soliders also in service. They where crucial in allowing Finland to mobilize it's mainly infantry army and march them to the front, by holding of the invading Soviets and buying time.

These troops went trough the same training as regular solider, but they where generally equiped more lightly, but contained many veterans from the Civil War and the Kinship Wars, if memory serves :-) .

We'll looking into the personnel count. Much of the unit stuff probably falls into our "garrison" system.

Most of these should fall into the garrison system, except for maybe the 50k, but garrisons still use reserve. This allowed the army to deploy it's troops to the frontlines when war broke out, which also was larger than the SK(White Guard Militia). Also note that Finland didn't have much Supply truck or other trucks so it didn't have almost any mechanized inantry, until they the continuation war when they had built up their military production and got stuff from Germany.

Thanks for the feedback... I've taken your recommendation for the starting reserves.
