Some important facts for SR'36

Post by redindus »

I am happy to see this go on live for everyone, but after i messed with it and noticed there are some things need to be corrected. Before i bring up this informations wanted to say i been studing Japanese History in WWII as well through out the Pacific for more than twenty-five years.

Okay, first of all, you will need to change the DDR for ship designation tags. They should be DD for Destroyers, SS for Submarines, CL for Light Cruisers, CA for Heavy Cruisers, BC for Battlecruisers, BB for Battleships, CVE for Escort Carriers, CVL for Light Carriers and CV for Fleet Carrier. Now im not sure how you got the transport/merchant ships, the transports are AP mostly while merchants are AKs. Are there any tankers or fleet oilers? If so that would make tankers as TKs and oilers AOs.

When i first play SR'36, noticed that some bases are missing in Central Pacific, Truk happen to be major staging area for IJN, compare to Pearl Harbor. Also missing Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Tarawa, and other fewer atolls. Since USA have Wake and Midway, why are these island/atolls are missing? They play important roles in the Pacific.

I havent checked the Oil Resources in the Dutch East Indies, that also play in important role to keep the Japan's Navy as well other hardwares going. Look like there are alittle too many airplanes started out.

Let me check the OOBs and see how the IJN are set. After checking out some IJN formations in Tokyo Bay...

SS RO-51 (Doesnt Exist)
SS RO-56 (Lunched in Nov, 1944)
SS I-51 (Doesnt Exist)
SS I-55 (Launched in April, 1944)
SS I-59 (Doesnt Exist)
SS RO-53 (Doesnt Exist)
SS RO-57 (Doesnt Exist)
SS RO-30 (Doesnt Exist)
SS I52 (should been I-52 and Launched in Dec, 1943)
SS I-58 (Launched Sept, 1944)
SS I-60 (Doesnt Exist)
Note, i havent checked all the units, so just letting you know what going on here.

Noticed some bases have too much installations, for example Miri in Borneo having airfield and other installations. Least got some Oil Rigs there, like it should be. Btw why named something else instead of Miri?? This is sandbox game, not sure if there will be campaign as historical settings in the Pacific or '36.

I looked into the data files, doesnt look like it will be easy to mod it. Incase you guys dont correct this, i could make a mod to bring this to historical settings, but only in the Pacific though. Btw i have do alot of modding for many other games, such as Hearts of Iron Series, Pacific Storm Allies, War in the Pacific, etcs.

I think these are generic unit names. In SRCW naval units did not have "real" names. So this is an excellent improvement.

I can help some, but my time is limited with two other projects i been working on. I knew it would be just startup forces for now, since its sandbox game. Let me know if you need anything

@Zuikaku; No, these are actual names;

The "SS" here is a class designation like "inf" for infantry or "rec" for recon.

RO51; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_l1.htm
RO-56, RO-53, http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_l2.htm
I-51; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_kd1.htm
I-55, I-58 http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_kd3a.htm (note I-55 was renamed twice)
I-59, I-60; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_kd3b.htm
RO-57; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_l3.htm
RO-30; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_kt.htm
I52; http://www.navypedia.org/ships/japan/jap_ss_kd2.htm

If you'd like to challenge our orbats or equipment data, please include links to supporting data.

If you find locations that are missing or have the wrong elements, please note them in the Map Errata thread and include the x,y coordinates

Location names are being reviewed.

You are correct that there are lots of modding opportunities. If you start a post in the modding section for what you'd like to create, I"m sure some of our users will offer suggestions on where to start your work.

They are not generic, someone actually entered them into the Orbats. As for the designations, if I don't remeber wrongly, the IJN used only pennant numbers as designatiors of their ships and the DD, CVE, CVL et al was/where western type of designating their military ships. And for class designations they used the 'type' designation.
for example they speak of type designations, If anyone speaking Japanese like to confirm the link below from the original that would be great.
http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... %2589%25A6

Although google translate translates the designations to "Italy, No. thirteen", the English one is I-13
http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... %2589%25A6

So changing the sub designations from I to SS is wrong, since this change after the Japanese Self Defense Forces came into existence.

The SS/CV/DD/BB/etc naming convention is US/British. It would vary with nationality and naval heritage (e.g., some were based on either the US or UK navies, and would adopt their system).

Possible that i missed some ships, that are actually sank and not sure about that web site infos. Samn for wikipedia, there are so many fault infos.

Those SS/DD/CL, etcs are useful though, i would recommend using them.

I checked and see how the Destroyers are set, i cant find any around Japan. Sure hope you guys going to add Truk and other bases, otherwise remove Wake and Midway Islands to be balance. Since USA have Pearl Harbor, IJN need Truk though.

Anyway thank for bringing that ship datas, so can go over my work. I got my sources from many books and kept record of it over the years, since there are some are misguided. Having huge collection on American Naval Dictionary (8 vols) and now you can go online with that. Not easy to collect all the proper sources.

Welcome to the club. I may have you beat by a few years, but after the first 10 I think it's mostly collecting of additional trivia

Truk: Redindus is absolutely correct. The Japanese had developed Truk as a major base at the beginning of the war. It held 4 airfields and large fuel storage facilities. It did not, however, offer pier or drydock facilities -- ships had to anchor in the harbor and have supplies brought out by lighters from shore.

Truk - The Pacific War Online Encyclopedia

Kwajalein: A key air base and fleet anchorage point in the Japanese perimeter defense in 1941. However, it was never developed very fully -

Battle of Kwajalein - Wikipedia
Actual defenses on the Marshalls, however, were never very substantial or heavily manned. After nearly 10 years of construction, fortifications on the Marshalls were considerably inferior[citation needed] when compared with Tarawa, which had been turned into a fortress in less than eighteen months.

Furthermore, less than half of the troops stationed in the Marshalls were combat trained,[citation needed] the rest being support and labor troops with little or no combat training. It was not until after the Japanese position in the Solomons and New Guinea began to deteriorate that Imperial Headquarters made plans to strengthen the Marshalls. In fact, by September 1943, the Japanese High Command had written off the Gilberts and Marshalls as lost, deciding that the areas should be used to fight a delaying action while a new defense perimeter was created from the Banda Sea through Caroline Island and the Marianas Islands. Additionally, combat units were ordered to the Marshalls from the Philippines, Manchukuo, and the homeland, with additional air power to be flown in from both the homeland and nearby Truk.

Good points, redindus.

I dont mean changing their orginal names, use SS for classes, for example SS I-51.

I loaded up and checked out United States, noticed they have no ships. So they are still working on this guys. OOBs are quite big for three big nations. Number one on ships would be Great Britian, then second place would be USN, then third place would be Japan.

Not sure how long it will be for them to get all the facts down and launch a '36 campaign, looking forward to it :)

Did you check ships in reserve status? It's been a couple weeks since I started a US game but I seem to remember finding a couple of carriers available already. The Lexington and Saratoga were commissioned in 1927. Langley and Ranger should also be on the board in '36. Enterprise was not commissioned until 1938, so is being built in any game starting in '36.

Good source: US Fleet Carriers in World War II

I distinctly remember being frustrated with the activation process when I tried to bring enough destroyers out of reserve to protect my coasts. Too many mouse clicks, no group selection for dozens of boats.

Lookslike many japanese sources only use the pennant num while english sources use "DD-" infront of the pennants. I think that you should try to name ships and their classes as closley as possible to local customs at the time. For exambe I discovered that the 'DD-35 Fubuki' was originally named 'Thirty-fifth issue destroyer' only with the pennant 35 before being renamed Fubuki(Snow Storm) in 1928.

As I said above, I think they should be named as closeley as possible and as much as it is practical acording to local customs. SS I-something is away from that, one reasyon why I like this game because of the realism in every aspect, including this one, it gives you an better chance to role play that your a Japanese leader etc.

Still trying to figure out how to play this, let me see how to check the reserve units. Wish they had two windows left and right disabled unless i click on a base or group, its taken up room and blocking some views.

Bottom left corner, top right tab, you get a window displaying collapsable trees of Active(or Selected?)/Deployed/Reserve units.
