Let's say a DD is fighting another DD. I assume they both use surface attack but is any other value used like any of the XXXX defense values?
What if the DD was fighting a sub? Again, submerged attack is probably used for the DD's attack but what value does it use when the sub fires back?
[Edit]
I read up on units stats here http://www.supremewiki.com/node/75
and it seems that surface defense would be used in both of those cases. Any chance we could get some insight on how the combat formulas work? Like can a unit miss or do no damage when attacking if the other unit's defense is too high?
What combat values are used when ships fight?

It's much easier to answer specific questions;
For most details like this, I need to corner George and ask him.
It can't miss, but the damage can be reduced to nothing.rogerbacon wrote:...can a unit miss or do no damage when attacking if the other unit's defense is too high?
