Merchant marine questions: How many at once and what is it c

Is there any way to see what kind of a unit is on each merchant marine ship?
Is there a maximum number of merchant marine ships that we can have at once? We don't actually produce these, do we? I'm working on the assumption that they are just created as needed. Is there a cost associated with them?

Merchant marine is unlimited and free with one unit per ship IIRC. To see what is on a ship, hover over the name of the ship in the left hand panel when you have it selected.
