Have they fixed the research dilemma ? (Only real units..)

I played a few times, first time was with China but i got bored since they couldnt develop any new units (almost)

Has this "problem" been solved? I earlier suggested "generic" units... or do you still have to buy all unit designs? = research is kinda unimportant...

Basically, yes. And it seems that many of the generic units are now better than their historical counterparts so you are not disadvantaged in this way by playing a minor.
