Returning Land

I'm playing as the US.
Germany conquered most of eastern Europe and France/England went to the rescue to win it back. All the land however remained in France/England control. I know if I (U.S.) had conquered a country, I would have the option to return to the original boundary. Any thoughts about how/when to return countries to the game for realistic purposes when not taken over by the human player. Actually even the "human" player (I don't think) can return the country to its original owner after having been taken over by a larger AI country.
