I usually take all control of my army away from the ai, so I lock the ai from being able to do anything with my military.

I usually lock out the navy, since the AI seems unable to use with any level of competence. On land, I give the minister low initiative so he can capture undefended land while I'm busy elsewhere. The air force I put on full so my units get resupplied by air and because so far I've found air units to be of little use relative to their cost and time to build.

If I'm conducting any kind of overseas operation then I'll lock out the minister from those units, as he tends to try sending them home at every opportunity.

0% ai, or as close as I can get to it for both the military and economy, relaxing the economy controls after I become resource independent.
