Are there a penelty to research stuff that got a later date?

One of my favorite things to do is to replay actual historic events with hypothetical alternative factors. It is why this game is so appealing to me and others. Speeding up research is one way I do this, and I have never noticed or read about anyone experiencing negative effects.

Well, Germany was messing about in mid '40s (A9/A10), US (SM-65 Atlas) and USSR (R7 Semyorka) had operational ICBM's in service in late '50s...you are not that much ahead are you?
