Every Country Randomly Eliminates

Post by cadetpeters89 »

[Edit by Moderator: We have found the problem. The victory condition - Capture is broken.]

OVERVIEW:
I've encountered what seems to be a bug where about a year to two years into the game each country just 'dies' I get the _ has just been eliminated for about 100 countries (and colonies).

DETAILS: (of problem)
-around 1-2 years into a game, countries die (time not accurately recorded, but at least >1year)
-countries are eliminated via normal messages (IE popup message, and notification)
-countries die sequentially (IE China dead, [1/4 secondish pause] Iceland dead, etc... not all at once)
-if I pause the game, countries still die to a point (IE it seems as though there are a cache of 30+ countries that die during gameplay but once you pause, the game catches up at some point and no more die)
--However, once I unpause game, more countries die.
-It seems the majority of countries die the first day (IE the 'death rate' is not linear)
-if I continue to 'play' game during this apocalypse, countries continue to die randomly (patterns not assessed at least) until all are destroyed except human player's
-no other problems occur (that I can see)

DETAILS: (of environment)

game:
-occurred in both nvida work around and not
-occurred in campaign and sandbox (campaign with USA and USSR and sandbox with UK and West Germany [only ones tested])
-occurred with default and custom lobby settings
-no modding done to game files (I did a clean install once the problem persisted)
-running with update 7.3.1 (no problem found before I updated)

cpul:
-Windows 8 pc
-8gb ddr3 ram
-quad core processor

Will post screens if necessary later...

Please help resolve because this severly limits gameplay. Thanks!

yes, I've tried basically every major lobby setting but no dice. I still think it is a bug somewhere else because if it were a lobby setting it should not 'break' with just the defaults set...

So was your only lobby setting change to use "no units"?

Do you have a savegame from the day after the first round of deaths that if played on exhibits the problem you describe?

I've played it with many lobby settings.

I'll try to replicate the problem and post it.

well, that's particularly strange. Although looking at your game you had changed for more lobby settings than you mentioned. We will investigate.

I changed those lobby settings for two reasons; first, so it would run fast (so I could replicate the problem) and two because that is what I usually play at anyway...

The issue would still happen if I used the default settings as well.

I did uninstall and reinstall the game as well and it still does it...

Thanks though!

We haven't gotten to analyzing your savegame yet but I have still been unable to recreate the situation. I started a game no units, fog of war off, enhanced spotting off, enhanced ranges off, low nuke penalties, VH military, VH economy, VE diplo, approval effects low, critical UN off, random events none and got past '56 no problems. What other lobby settings were you changing?

Have you any mods installed beside vanilla?

So I may have narrowed it down.

The error first occurred on a modded game. I then uninstalled SRCW and installed a fresh download.

I attempted to play using default settings (and various other lobby settings) and got the same error.

However, I looked at the program files and found that one of my 'backup' folders was still there from earlier mods (on the old install of the game). I looked around some more and found a default.unit.BAK file as well from the old install. I took them all out, unistalled the game, deleted all program files from SRCW and reinstalled the freshest copy.

I attempted to run the game last night and it appears to be working fine now...

I will run another test soon to make sure that was it but for now, I say there is an issue with how SRCW reads 'irrelevant' files in the file system (IE backups, renamed files, etc).

Will keep you posted.

Okay, thanks for updating. I'm remove "bug" from the thread title. If you encounter this in something unmodded let us know but for now we're not investigating further, particularly that no one else has run into this.

Follow up question, are you using the Steam version?

Me and WolfSpirit believed this was due to Cheat Engine at first but after testing it (see further posts on that topic) we realised that it wasn't to do with Cheat Engine at all. I also run the steam version of the game but updated it manually using the installer. Every single time I've tried to play the game I seem to get somewhere between 1950-52 and then suddenly for no apparent reason, half the world will surrender. Then usually there is a pause, sometimes dozens of countries left, sometimes just a few like UK (who I play as), France, USA and Russia. Then eventually those too will surrender leaving me apparently victorious. I mean, I want to win, but not that quick.

Think this might be something to do with people manually updating the game with steam versions? Also, updates for steam are already set to 'off' so steam hasn't updated anything, only I've updated the game.
