I did some testing and found how/when the behavior takes place. (Initiative level is irrelevant, none or high it still happens). If you give a move order, and then give a patrol order while in the air, they will patrol between those two points. The first cycle they fly as expected, between the two points and return to refuel. The second time, they will *not* return to base to refuel. They will keep flying between the two points until they crash.
Giving a patrol order FROM the airbase (before they are airborne) seems to work OK, they will keep flying out as far as fuel allows, then return, over and over. Of course, doing patrol from base is nowhere near as useful as they won't loiter, they fly to the point and immediately turn back. The "Frontage" covered is also only a single hex if the base is behind the lines. Using the move/patrol method you can cover wide areas, patrol borders, etc, and worked great in 2020/GC
This suicidal behavior is easily reproducible:
1: Start a game (Doesn't matter who, as long as they have aircraft).
2: Deploy a reserve air unit from a base, or move an already deployed air unit to an existing airfield/base.
3: Give a move order
4: While airborne, give a patrol order to another hex.
5: Watch as a/c flies between two, then returns to refuel.
6: A/c then launches and resumes flight between prior two points. A/c will not return to base when low on fuel, will continue flight until it runs dry and crashes.
It's always the second "cycle", and it always flies till it dies.

Re: patrolling air units crash because lack of fuel
Could somebody figure out an ini file code for this?
Code: Select all
Sec. 91.151 — Fuel requirements for flight in VFR conditions.
(a) No person may begin a flight in an airplane under VFR conditions unless (considering wind and forecast weather conditions) there is enough fuel to fly to the first point of intended landing and, assuming normal cruising speed—
(1) During the day, to fly after that for at least 30 minutes; or
(2) At night, to fly after that for at least 45 minutes.
(b) No person may begin a flight in a rotorcraft under VFR conditions unless (considering wind and forecast weather conditions) there is enough fuel to fly to the first point of intended landing and, assuming normal cruising speed, to fly after that for at least 20 minutes.

That hapened to me too, and another simillar thing with a tanker aircraft. I was doing a recon patrol over enemy territory, and after i ressuplyed my Tu-95 over the pacific, my Tu-22 tanker crashed.

Re: patrolling air units crash because lack of fuel
That it would, New Zealand can only afford to buy so many U-3's from the US! Seems a shame to lose them to a bug, although I am glad I wandered across this article because when it happened I just assumed that the Chinese (wow are they heavily involved in this thread!) somehow shot it down instantly!tkobo wrote:....be nice to see this fixed next update.......
Much Thanks
