As far as I know, Fistalis had to do the same thing (pick two sphere leaders) when porting old SR2020 scenarios (global crisis and shattered world) to SRCW, so I presume there is no way to eliminate the "sphere" segment from the game.

This is correct.. You can assign sphere leaders and leave everyone else neutral, then set the default victory to anything but sphere. But you MUST have sphere leaders for any mod to work.
You could set up the spheres to be axis and allies or w.e or you could just set the sphere leaders as some inconsequential nations and leave everyone neutral.

Not sure about space race.. but that could be as easy as removing the space race tech effects from each of the techs. So the space race would still exist but no one could ever win it.

Which ever nations are assigned 2989(blue) and 889(red) are the leaders.
As to space race its tech effect 21 you would need to remove from numerous techs.

I thought that means colonial leader, so if its not, then where is colonial parent assigned ?

In .cvp file there is sphere 1 and -1

Colony parents are set via the ParentRegion entry.

To change sphere leaders You need to replace 2989 and 889 with your new sphere leaders and assign The US and USSR different region ID#s

I told you, replace the US(2989) and USSR (889) with your new sphere leaders.
Im talking about the region ID# here.

ParentRegion entry is a separate entry which controls colonies.

correct. Which means you will have to redo colonies, relations, treaties and anything else that uses the IDs. Shouldnt be a big deal though if you're doing a WW2 scenario since all of those would have to be redone anyway

BG could add a few variables to the .scenario file, 'sphere_0 = 889' and 'sphere_1 = 2989' so that the user could detirmine what region is a sphere leader
