Ok, I think I will actually start one of these now

Backround:

The 1947 election

For a long time, the Democratic Alliance and the Radical Party would be elected to be president of France. However, WW2 changed France forever. The Democratic Alliance was disbanded, and the Radicals were less popular. So, who took advantage of the declining major parties? Well, two parties became popular. The biggest was the Socialists. The Socialists (SFIO) had been a small party for a long time. They got 13% in 1932 and 16% in 1939. The Socialists wanted to set up social safety nets to help France’s recovery from WW2. The other new party, the Republicans (MRP), were founded in 1944. Originally, this party was allied to the Socialists because they worked together to make the new constitution. However, the party soon allied with more centrist parties. This would be the first Presidential Election they would participate in. Although weakened, the Radical Party still existed. The Radical Party did not like the constitution put forth by the Socialists. The smallest party was the Liberty Party (PRL), which was a conservative party and also did not support the new constitution.

The Socialist Party chose Vincent Auriol. Auriol was mayor of Muret, a town in southern France. Vincent also was the Minister of Finance under Leon Blum. He devalued the French Franc to 30% of the US dollar, which was seen as very controversial. He also served on many other presidents cabinets, and was a Representative to the U.N.

The Republicans chose Auguste Champetier de Ribes. Ribes was the President of France's Upper house. He was elected in a tie but won because he was older than his opponent, George Marrane. He was also a representative during the Nuremberg Trials.

Not much is known about the Radical Party’s candidate, Jules Gasser, or the Liberty Party candidate, Michel Clemenceau.

In this election, the parliament would vote for a presidential candidate. 876 members of parliament voted. The result was Auriol getting a majority. He got 452 votes, which gave him about 51%. Ribes finished far behind, getting only 242 votes, which gave him about 27%. Gasser only got 122 votes, about 13%, which was far less than in the 1931 election where the party got 56%. The Liberty Party only got about 7%, or 60 votes. The clear winner was Vincent Auriol, and would get 6 years until the 1953 elections.

1947 - 1949

One key job of the President was to appoint the Prime Minister. Vincent decided to appoint Paul Ramadier. Ramadier was mayor of Decazeville, and part of the SFIO. He voted for the marshall plan.

North Vietnam

French Indochina was threatened. Why? Guerilla movements were trying to make a communist state called Vietnam. It is key that we stop this rebellion before it is too late.

Also important to note, Prime Ministers usually only serve one year, so right now (8 Oct 1949), the Prime Minister is Henri Queuille of the Radical Party.
