Cancelling Treaties - "go slow" diplomacy - One at a Time

Post by geminif4ucorsair »

I would like BG to seriously include the provision that Player's can cancel treaties, one at a time, in any particularly order the Player chooses.

It is a reality in the world of diplomacy that nations unset with other nation-state actors routinely find themselves anxious to "send a message" of dissatisfaction and one of the routine diplomatic methods, if it gets real serious, to cancel one or more treaties.

The fact that treaties have have no expiration dates in SR-CW (or other SR's), such as Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty (SALT) 1 and 2, there is not available the other technique of "allowing a treaty to expire" without renewing it.

A recent good example of this in practical purposed, if BG does not believe the veracity that this kind of events do occur in diplomatic relations among states, take Turkey's severance of several treaties with Israel after the Israeli navy intercepted a "peace flotilla" en-route to Gaza, boarding and seizing the ships of the unarmed flotilla. Israel was enforcing its own (one nation) blockade of the Gaza peninsula.

It is interesting to note that just five years ago, Turkey and Israel were cooperating in weapons development (IAI aircraft company was leading bidder to rebuild Turkey's ageing inventory of F-4 Phantom II to Israeli standards) and even small-scale exercises were on the table. Since then, both government's have had changes of leadership....and the seizure of the humanitarian flotilla that left from Turkey and bound for Gaza, was the spark that has sent relations tumbling.

So, please grant us a return to earlier Player option....which can include AI also cancelling "one at a time" treaties when it determines disaffection with a players actions (invading a AI controlled region, etc.).....a contribution that returns the SR game to more realistic parameters.

Thanks. :-)

Never understood the rationalle around having no ability to cancel treaties in the first place.

As Albania did during the Sino-Soviet split, they remained a member of COMECON the communist free trade alliance and left the Warsaw Pact!

France leaving NATO's integrated command structure in the 1950's while maintaning other agreements with member states. The 1973 Oil Embargo was done by several nations who had bi-lateral defence agreements with either or both the US and the UK.
