Surface Attack

Post by Hakuren »

That particular stat is messed up big time in CW.

Battleship Iowa or Richelieu has much lower Surface attack stat than for example Swedish Tre Kronor [520/470 vs 770]. Of course there is still range difference, but how nonsensical it is that battleship armed with 9*406mm/8*380mm guns is less powerful vs light cruiser armed with 7*152mm. And AA Juneau cruiser is even stronger that Tre Kronor [780]!

There is whole list.

I think your just not taking into account the effectiveness of torpedos.
Both cruisers you mentioned were equipped with torpedo tubes where as the Iowa was totally reliant on its guns other than the ability to carry and launch missiles which can do even more damage if you have the missiles to load onto it.

But the Iowa also had a secondary of ~20 5 in which were still effective. While torpedoes are effective, by that notion, all WW2 destroyers should have SA of around 500-600 since they had torps as well.

My conclussion with this is that they have a high SA due to rate of fire. While the Iowa's could only launch ~2 salvos a min, the smaller ships can launch 6-10 salvoes, and the Winchester class basically had atomatic 6 in guns.

The Cruisers he listed require the Modern torpedo tech. Which implies better torpedos than the WW2 destroyers.

But however you rationalize it to yourself isn't important. Important thing to remember is that there are many variables to put into any one of a units stats and even then they are subjective at best. 8O

Then my point stand. You can't mix surface attack with torpedo attack.

How many torpedoes you can load on a ship? Max 2 salvos.
How many shells can battleship land on a cruiser/destroyer before that cruiser is in range of effective fire? (excluding here modern missile ships, talking artillery only)
How many hits destroyer/cruiser can sustain while reloading torpedoes under battleship fire?
How effective is 12 6"mm shells (Worcester CL) against 350-400mm or armor?
How effective is 5-6 4.5"-5" shells against 350-400mm of armor?
How good are torpedoes against land targets? Sorry about sarcasm, but many light (artillery) ships is far superior vs battleship when dealing with land forces.

Surface Attack is messed up, no question asked.

Surface mean SURFACE. Not UNDERWATER for crying out loud.

By that measure Japanese Shimakaze destroyer was more powerful than battleship Yamato because in one salvo he delivered 15 torpedoes of 609mm caliber while Yamato only 9 shells of 460mm. It matters not that one shell could pulverize any ship class except battleship.

Actually surface attack means attacking a ship thats on the surface. Not a specific mode of attack. Just like hard attack means attacking a hard target not
attacking with hard shells. When dealing with Land units the Surface attack isn't used. The hard or soft target attack values are used depending on the target.

It seems you don't understand what each attack represents.
So here's a handy guide to help you understand.
  • Hard attack =used when attacking hard land targets.
  • Soft attack = used when attacking soft land targets.
  • Surface attack = used when attacking surface ships.
  • Submerged attack= used when attacking submerged naval units.
  • Close air attack= used when attacking low flying targets.
  • Mid air atatck= used when attacking mid flying targets.
  • High air attack = used when attacking high flying targets.
  • Fortification attack = used when attacking buildings.
  • Close combat attack= used when attacking units that are in close combat hexes (like cities and dense forests)
Hopefully this list will help you understand the different attack values a bit better. Because as you can see when a unit attacks land units it uses a totally different value than it uses when attacking surface ships.

As to your "how many" questions on how many torpedos etc that is all taken care of by supply usage or reaction time and not battle attack stats. Different units use supplies faster and carry different amount of supplies, which means some will run out of ammo quicker. The reaction time rating shows how fast they can reload between each salvo.

Its also worth noting that the IOWA class attack mode is indirect due to the large guns. Meaning when they attack a hex they there is a chance for damaging each unit in that hex. Where as the juneau and other cruisers only damage the specific unit they are targeting. So while the specific stats may be a little bit lower they are damaging far more units with each salvo making the Total damage done with them much higher.

This models the effect of Ballistic artillery fire. So the damage output for the Iowa is actually X * Y. Where X is the attack value based on the target and Y is the number of units hit in the targeted hex.

Hopefully i've provided information for you to understand how things work a bit better.
Knowing all this if you think any specific unit stats aren't correct I would suggest you post to the unit errata thread.

(also it seems the attack values you listed in your original post aren't current, you may want to fully update before posting stat issues as many of them have been modified in updates)

All these issues will get straightened out with a new scrub of all CW units added to the database, with forthcoming update.
