In the spirit of the Cold War.

Post by GIJoe597 »

I would like to have a weekly or more frequent game where I take the U.S.A. and another takes the USSR (Russia). And all other countries are open for anyone to play.
The details follow:

Version: GC 6.7.63
Volitility: Very High
Mil Diff: Very Hard
Economic Diff: Normal
Diplo Diff: Very Easy
Debt: Off
Allied Victories: on
Fixed Caps: Off
FOW: Off
Enhanced: off
Elim units when falls: off
Allow nuke: On
Nuc penalty High
Resources: Standard
Initial Funds: Default
3rd party: on
Critical UN: On
Random events: Low

Russia and the U.S.A. may not declare war on each other, or any other country. They can only fight via proxies. EDIT or clarity: They can fight back if war is declared on them. That is to say, Russia would support any and all communists/dictators and the U.S.A. would support democracies. Each side can send any units, tech, resources etc to another nation.

Any country other than these two can do as they please, keeping in mind big brother is watching.

Anyone interested in this type of game. It will be more of a diplomatic game for the 2 superpowers, so it requires a certain mindset to stick with it.

I'm game for a "supporting cast role" if we can ever figure out why GameRanger can't 'see' GC on my computer. Oddly it sees SR2020, just not GC.

I knew it would not be easy to find someone willing to play this style since it takes patience and a lack of ADD. But if it helps I will play the USSR.

Id be up for this,it could be very interesting.

Though AI and player declarations on the two supers might be a problem.

Potential easy fix. The two supers cannot DoW each other, period. They can only defend against invaders and MUST win by supporting allies who fight against enemies of the alliance. Voila, proxy wars...

I say potential since this possibly results in less fun by the supers. But...it's the COLD WAR.

Possible alternative rules...Supers can attack in support of a non-super country about to wipe out an ally. Could make for some "I shot you first; no you di'int, I shot YOU first issues."

Or, supers can also invade countries who DoW them, and say to hell with the whole cold war idea except that the two supers cannot DoW each other.

Not a problem, they only way one of them can expand is through defense. Rule is they cannot declare war, but, if war is declared on them, have at it.

If you are interested, type what country you would like to play, need 1 dedicated superpower player. Other countries can come and go as they please.

GIJoe597 = U.S.A or USSR

That means he with the highest build cap will pretty much be able to expand at will.....Perhaps another house rule about breaking diplo -IE not allowed by supers ?This might hamper that some.

And remove china and india from the player play list ?

Personally, id think this is one of the games the devs would want to jump into.Theres likely to be things to learn that can be spotted in this, and applied to the upcoming game.

It seems tkobo (Total Knockout, Body Odor?) and I will be playing this game on Wednesday's. As mentioned in the original post any other country than USSR and U.S.A. are fair game and can do as they like.

We are working on a time, and maybe some minor details. He seems to really want a Dev in the game. But I do not think that will happen.

tkobo and I played our first game session Wednesday. Was entertaining, but I very soon realized the way the game is coded USSR is at a disadvantage, at least for what the point of the game is. Within a few months I had about 5 DoW's on me, as I was playing the USSR. The intent was not to wage war, but to establish dominance over the world via indirect means. Add in the fact that Russia starts as a democracy and it can be challenging to establish the correct connections.
I decided to align with what I consider traditional soviet allies. Mostly commie and dictator regimes with China being the exception.

Since I do not often play Russia, perhaps 2 times before, I did not realize they start with some very terrible Inf units and only 7 research facilities. I also left debt on at game start. I figured it was more "realistic" that way, since historically the USSR was out spent which was one of the larger issues for its collapse. As a consequence, Russia is struggling with multiple wars, and a treasury that fluctuates on the verge of entering red. Since the game does not give me (a "supreme" ruler) total authority over my DEFCON setting this has been a tightrope.

The wars are basically free land for me, yes, but it is not what I intended. At any rate, once the misfits are cleaned up, perhaps we can get to the business of proxy playing. (Note to Devs: There really has/needs to be a mechanic like in Paradox games that allows many more options at wars end. The option for negotiated peace and/or land swap, up to and including all ground taken during a war)

Now, as for the U.S.A., tkobo is playing his part exactly as planned, he is sending forces/units to the countries Russia is fighting, and it is making it difficult. Sending obsolete BMP-1's against a horde of FRES that the U.S.A. has given to your enemy is a struggle. But in the end it only delays the inevitable, which in game terms, is working as intended as it forces Russia to constantly battle that treasury, DEFCON, unit/facility build demon.

The glorious peoples of the USSR shall overcome! We realize the future only holds more challenges and we look forward to them.

NOTE: I did not realize Russia starts with only one AN-225 built and to add insult to injury it is not even full strength having a capacity of only 2000t. The design calls for 3000t. In the year 2020 there is only one of those planes in Russia?

I look forward to the next engagement. Our current plans are to play every Wednesday starting around 3pm EST. We played for about 4 hours I think, I was slightly distracted as I had a landscaping crew here. Anyone wishing to join in is welcome to play any country other than the USSR or U.S.A. Remember neither of us can actively attack/engage you. You would have carte blanche to due whatever you want. Some very interesting chances for some smaller countries without fear of the in game "super powers" trouncing you.

Keep in mind, every region stupid enough to dow russia, is just giving GICommie free land  And america is pushing its economy to the limit by providing the units that slow those acquisitions down.

The only small hope the free world has, is if the US can rush thru the tech levels and get the high end units fast enough. If youve ever fought an AI equiped with slav 4s and f204 coyotes, you have an idea how bloody that can be.If the US can reach those, and equip enough major regions with them, the free world has a chance.

Other wise ...its just ugly soviet invasion after ugly soviet invasion.

AND I have to be very careful on who i hand out to though, as inherit is on.I hate inherit AND the defection system soooooo much.

It would be a better game ,IF the super powers were not dowed, but then russia wouldnt stand much of a chance.
