one coffee to rule them all

Post by NukemRico »

?+ Just had an idea for my first attempt at an AAR: I love coffee and, though Brazil produces more, the first country you think of when coffee is mentioned is Colombia. So I'll google the top 10 coffee producers, and then attempt to take Colombia and conquer the other 9. I'm still getting my head around parts of this game, so it might be a bit before I actually go for it, but I think it sounds like fun. The open ended sandbox games are great, but I'd rather have some specific mission in mind, hence my shameless Lord Of The Rings ripoff.

ok I'm gonna start practice games today. I prefer small countries like Israel or Cuba, so Colombia is going to be a handful I think. I haven't decided whether to play with the Capital Victory condition as opposed to Total. Capital would definitely be faster for sure. But either way the plan atm is to grab some resource production facilities out in the boondocks where our countries meet, and there's no roads and poor supply and hopefully lure the Brazilian army out there. Sounds alot more interesting than an amphibious landing out on their sea side and trying to smash the front door in. I'll be using helicoptered in Special Forces resupplied by air, and heavily escorted bombers so the lack of roads/supply means nothing to me, but any enemy forces coming in might find it a one way trip when they run outta gas in the middle of nowhere. And all those yuks coming up what roads there are, might be in for a shock when I do the same thing to a town behind them and cut em off. I'll try it out in practice and who knows.

alrighty here we go. I'll be using Global Crisis in hopes that the other nations have their own agendas, and not just sit around waiting for me to do something. I'll be using all settings on default except for Enhanced Range and Enhanced Spotting which will be turned off. Also Military Difficulty will be Very Hard. Maybe we win, maybe we don't but if I have a good time I don't really care. All aboard, next stop: Brazil!

Colombia's starting economy is good, but GDP falling and social spending is in the basement. I moved everything up, especially Infrastructure, lowered taxes, and of course locked all the ministers out entirely. Research spending is maxed and 1st two techs up are Basic Missiles and Jet Turbine Helicopters. I have Ind Goods, Mil Goods, Research Facility, Aircraft Fabrication facilities under construction so far. Also a Airfield and Supply Depot down at my eventual jumping off point. Haven't decided which helicopters or fighters I want yet, but as for the bombers well... :D

Interesting choice. I find them to be adequate, but their low attack range is worrisome. Perhaps you plan on relying heavily on missiles?

oh they are purely a choice of whim. Against my first target, Brazil, they should be ok. Gonna splurge on their escorts/CAP and use MiG-25P Foxbats, another favorite. They have a 5 hex range and are High Targets. Gotta admit to some head scratching on unit build costs though. A MiG29A Fulcrum is $156M to build, but a 50yo CH-47 Chinook is in the $400M's? And I can airlift a towed 105mm artillery unit in my starting UH60-A, but Special Forces won't load into it even though they are under the load limit? Beginning to understand the frustration German commanders must have felt during the Battle of The Bulge when they learned, only after starting the operation, that some of their tanks were to big for the bridges they needed to traverse. I could play this a thousand times to dial in the perfect strategy but where's the fun in that? Just having a fun game here, so no worries. Might be a short war anyways, as Argentina one side and Ecuador on the other have medium attack probabilities against me.

Concerning Inf/unit weight. The technical card will list the unit when it is "empty" or does not have a combat load. Once you deploy a unit it draws ammo, supplies, etc. and has a heavier weight. To see true number always look at a deployed unit. This might be the issue with the SF not loading.

Concerning the Cost of items. You will notice ANYTHING the U.S.A. make in game has a huge cost to it. It is just the way BG decided to program it I suppose. We are not allowed to pay 3rd world wages to our employees/contractors.

When I enquire about a particular unit, it is not to get you to use a different one. I am genuinely interested in some of the thought processes that other people have when choosing. I find it interesting to see "behind the curtain", if you will.

hey no worries, no offense taken at all. :) Ya it turns out the SF in the field weigh 135 tons, well over most copters ability. I wish you could see a units full stats when buying a design from another nation. The snippet you get doesn't tell things like cargo limit etc.

still a long slog til my first B-52 is finished. I totally should have built 3 aircraft fabrication plants right off the bat! ugh. oh well that's how ya learn. It's June 2020, my income is positive as usual and my GDP finally went positive as well. I'm moving a couple combined arms stacks down to my border with Ecuador as I'm sure they'll attack me as soon as I hit Brazil. I have a 2nd Air fab plant nearly online and about to start a 3rd. This AAR won't be nitpickishly detailed until the action starts as it's my 1st, however looky what I raided Colombia's plentiful piggy bank for: :D

Mr Foxbat should be more than a match for the flying garage sale Brazil will try to pass off as an air force. :)

When not playing a Western Block nation, I use the Russian MI-6 Hook for SF troops, maybe it would work for you also. There is also the MI-26 Halo. Both have excellent cargo capacity, but the hook has the greater range. Eventually you may want to take a look at the V-44 Stork. It's VTOL with fantastic range and speed and a huge capacity.

well at present Colombia's tech level hasn't even broke 90 yet. I picked up the CH-53D design from Germany, and have my 3rd Air Fab plant under construction. Right now one is building B-52's, and the other is doing MiG-25 Foxbats (love that plane's looks and singleminded devotion to maximum speed).

I'm also piling up some units on the border with Ecuador and trying provoke them to attack so I wont have to watch my back for em once I got at Brazil. They've already cut off diplomatic relations, now just send a few spies...

we have our 1st casualty. Georgia Republic went down to unspecified opponent(s). I now have B-52's, MiG-25P's, a few more Special Forces, and M48A1-A5 Upgrade's (105mm) currently under construction, and my 3rd Air Fab (for the CH-53D's) is mostly complete. As soon as Modern Sonar finishes research, I'll grab up a frigate/destroyer design and start expanding my limited navy.

was looking over 2 of my neighbors, Venezuela and Ecuador, with moderate CB% against me and what do I find?

Image

sigh. *rolls eyes* Venezuela and FOURTEEN allies are already at war with Brazil?!? course this little menagerie is spread all over the friggin planet, but a good half dozen are nearby. and also war doesn't necessarily mean anything is even happening. Given the laughable unit production capabilities by all involved, there might be nothing more than harsh language and rock throwing going on. If I really HAD to go now I might be able to do it, just not as conveniently, but Brazil will still be there in a few months I suppose.

following this AAR made me try my self as a leader of Columbia and I used similar settings as you, only difference being Military difficulty is normal but the relations are Very hot. After a month I was promptly attacked by Ecuadror and a month later by Venezuela so it is pretty interesting so far :D
