Italian administration running government 'without a manual'
By IPA (Italian Press Agency)

The press secretary for the Prime Minister of Italy tried to defuse criticism of their handling of the economy during a press conference today by blaming the previous administration.

After winning elections two year ago, the administration expanded industrial and military spending that at first saw an increase in GDP and the government treasury. But halfway into its term, the government's treasury is on a steady decline with no end in sight and the President's approval rating is slipping.

Economists explain that the rapid build-up of the military has left a gaping hole in the government's budget. "What people don't realize," said Afred Nobel, a Nobel prize-winning economist, "is that the military spending is consuming our nations' resources at a rapid pace. We require a huge amount of industrial goods to build the military. Our trade deficit is growing with petroleum-producing nations so that the military can have the resources it now needs to grow and maintain itself. Additionally, it's costing the government a huge sum to maintain the machinery they've just deployed."

Some economists are questioning the government's deployment of the military and are privately saying it's wasting taxpayer's money. Last month, the government deployed four aircraft carriers that some say serve no purpose. Additionally, military experts said the Kitty Hawk designs bought from the United States are outdated. "I'm sure the military is happy to have them but what can Italy really do with them?" asked Jorn Maelchevich who publishes a civilian military journal.

A reporter asked the press secretary about the military build-up and what the plans are but the government would not comment.

A Navy service member who was not authorized to speak to the media said that the military sent a carrier off the coast of Israel with only a single Predator drone and hasn't moved in months. The Kitty Hawk design can hold five squadrons.

Additionally, the same Navy member said that four diesel submarines were loaded with active missles and were escorted by three supply ships and first sailed to The Bahamas where they observed the United State's operations against Cuba and are now sailing for The Philippines, an ally who is cautious about China's navy in the South China Sea. He explained that navy officials can't understand why the government is wasting resources by globally deploying units that aren't protected nor, he claims, serve any real purpose.

But the government defended its actions during a press conference today. "Listen, the previous administration didn't leave us a manual about how to run the government. We have to figure these things out ourselves," the press secretary said. He also scolded the media. "We're not playing Civilization here, folks. This is far more realistic."

At the Italian Navy's Officer's School, a professor told the Italian Press Agency that the new government is starting to learn how the new military works. He said the deployments around the globe are no doubt designed to test the new equipment along with the communications and recon satellites that were launched within the past year. "What they're really going to have to figure out is how to build-up the military and maintain the economy at the same. We can't live on debt forever while our trade deficit balloons." he said.

Privately some military officials say the build-up is a prologue to war after the Defense Department increased DEFCON from 5 to 4. To reduce the military's budget for the bloated units, officials privately say the government could start a war and through attrition reduce the budget. Alfred Noble agrees. "Yes. Yes, that would do it."
