Since i had a 80% belli against Congo, they became the test war bed.

I am committing 21 F-22As,2 Mi-6 (carrying about 7 ground units,mostly green berets),49 RAH-66 to the war.

I started out by launching a cruise missile strike (from F-22s) removing the enemy barracks right by their capital.
I will now assign F-22s to escort the Mi-6s, and fly some of the RAH-66s in to deal with ground units.

Im just running into one mess after another.Since helicopters land to drop off ground units, they are destroyed almost instantly by any enemy ground units in the hex or adjacent hexes.

In addition, they have such low ammo storage and combat time, they cant even be used to defend an area, as they fire and retreat almost instantly.

And since cant hold land,they retreat all the way back to friendly territory, often to the extent of trying to retreat all the way back to home territory in they are damaged.

Im not at all sure this can be done,without being a complete disaster.Ive already lost 1 ground unit and 1 transport heli,and ive only been in two ground fights.

All 49 helicopter units, atatcking one unit of light infantry, failed to do more than dent it.

Its shaping up to be completely impossible.

My helicopters still appear to be able to park on water though,so they have that going for them. |O

Hey you completed an AAR though hehe. Helecopters are balls in my opinion. I only use them when trying to maximize effectiveness of an attack. I had a multiplayer game today with ColdStrange and we use our helecopters pretty effectively. Its all about using them AFTER a ton of ground units are already commited.

I took Arizona and then we dual attacked Mexico (I was CA and he was TX).

This AAR has confirmed my believes.

Helicopters are totally inefficient... They should be more important in the game... I usually only build some helis to transport supplies.

I'm playing SA too and I conquered all my neighbors. Rep. of Congo falldown in about a week or so. I conquered the capital, then a second capital, plus 1 or 2 important city and then they surrender. They are very weak. The "hardest" neighbor to conquer was Angola.

In 2 years game and going slowly I conquered Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Angola, Namidia, Congo. I have 3 active fronts (Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan). I think that they all will falldown pretty quick.

My feelings are that helicopter need to be rebalanced.they need to carry more ammo or use less per shot so that they can stay on the offensive longer.

And i think they need to have their damage upped.

They should roll in, do serious damage and have to rearm.As it stands now, they dont do the damage they need to.

Hello tboko and thanks for the AAR, however I have to somewhat disagree with you guys that helo's in the game are worthless. In my Argentina game I DoW against Brazil and used helo operations almost exclusively throughout the war while my ground forces slowly advanced the front line. You are a great player of this game, but your use of the helo's was haphazard at most because every unit has some limited air defense capabilities, especially against helo's. With this said I will offer that trained forces are more "in tune" with dealing with helo forces and will take appropriate action - thus your losses. You would have faired better if you had chosen appropriate landing sights that would have drawn their forces out to you so that you could spare your helo's and prep your SOF for combat operations (entrench, etc) or movement to contact. Your AA missions cannot happen without air support from fixed wing aircraft to soften up/distract the enemy forces. In situations where I air assaulted my SOF directly into a city hex with enemy troops I found that they faired pretty well, of course if the enemy air defenses are little to known then an air drop would be a better method. Your decision to conduct and "heli-borne air assault" type mission would have been better labelled "Special Operations War". Regardless, your efforts did prove a few points to us all and as we all know that you are the uber-player of this great game I believe you met your goals of this type operation. My suggestion: Reconsider the objectives of your heli assault forces.

Okay, theres no doubt my use here was extreme.
Also, i dont believe ive said they were "worthless".

As another poster pointed out, as combat support of ground units they can serve a purpose.Problem is, they should also be able to do the job on their own, and they cant.

Their damage per attack is too low, and their amount of shots is also.

Case in point.The helicopter unit above consists of 24 helicopters in the game.
A supply truck unit I make it attack , also consist of 24 trucks.

The helicopter unit will fire once, using more than half its ammo, and only destroy one truck.

So 24 attack helicopters(1 unit),attacked 24 supply trucks(1 unit), used more than half their ammo, and only destroyed one truck( 1/24 of the truck unit).

A single attack helicopter should have been able to destroy all 24 trucks.That 24 of these helicopters can only destroy one out of 24 of the trucks shows how incredibly underpowered they are currently balanced at.

While i cant do anything about the damage deficit, after reading Ruges AAR, i now think i can use the helicopters for with little to no loss on the air assualt end.

Im probably going to retry this.
