Peak Oil
I was wondering, does oil production in the game peak, as it is projected to in real ife?
Also, is there a way that Agriculture could take into account the massive amounts of fossil fuels required to produce food? I think that oil should have more implications if supplies run short.

We do have the world scenario beginning with insufficient output to meet all players' demands but production can be increased and deposits never run out. Since we only model 10-15 years total in a campaign we assume such events will happen after our timeline has run itself out.
As for Agri being affected by petroleum, that would be a wishlist idea. Feel free to expand on it in that thread.

Today the estimated coal reserves on the planet are 3900 billion...thats an extra 3000 billion in just norway!
Oil could be in such quantities around here somewhere aswell!
Maybe...

1. Those coal reserves are under the north sea and won't be accesible for another 30 years at best, and they are inaccesible with current technologyThe_Blind_One wrote:Also if I remember correctly...

2. The largest oil field in the world is the Ghawar Oil Field in Saudi Arabia, it is very unlikley we will ever find more oil than has existed there, at least 100 billion barrels, with about 40 billion remaining.
3. Most Petroleum geologists believe that 90% of the oil that can be recovered, has been discovered, it doesn't matter if we find 20 trillion barrels of oil in a field that's 20,000 feet under the ocean, because we'll never be able to recover it.
4. Oil fields take 10 years from discovery to the first drop reaching your gas tank.

The entire history of the Human race is built around an unending list of accomplishments "we'll never be able to do". Yes, I know Pyro's comments are two years old, but they remain an often used argument. I felt I would take the opportunity to remind everyone to "Never say Never".Pyrobzkt wrote:3. @Bigstone,
Never (:P) heard of it, I'll check it out.

reminds me that the soviets had a plan of a fleet of nuclear-propelled, tanker submarines for carrying the petrol extracted from under the ice cap.
was obviously too costly in those times where barrel was 14$. Could be back, though. Most technologies alerady exist, you just have to put them together. Though planting a pipe in the soil 15,000 feet underwater & pumping fuel is probably not a walk in the park - but other technologies needed are already here.

I suspect its less a problem off capability but one of cost, right now I would imagine that the cost of getting oil from the extreme depths of the ocean would be too high to make it profitable enough, however in 20 years that will probably change, once we realy are getting desperate to find more of the stuff.

Come to think of it, it could be programmed as a "project" in game to assign nuclear powered subs to establish and maintain a huge line to the country, generating "beyond the borders" income of oil.
I'd love to see unique secret projects for certain regions, such as "Siberian Dawn", a set of solar mirrors to instill increased solar light to siberia to improve conditions, agri terrain income and supplies.
Or "Greater GAP" a huge network of Dams in southeast Turkey (stop saying Kurdistan dammit ) to vastly improve terrain and citizen values, at cost of an impact on cultural approval.
