Air Transport Units

#1 Post by CedarEmpire » May 25 2014

Hello everyone!

I'm kinda new in this game and I used several air transport units (including the cougar helicopter and some Japanese transport plane. But the problem is that all these units only transport air defense units |O . What are some air transport units that could transport all kinds of troops ( or at least troops that attack ). Preferably units that are common for all regions.

Thank you!

Any type of transport unit is capable of moving any ground unit. The limiting factor is weight. Each unit has 2 weights though. When you view a units stats via the tech card it will show a weight, however that does not include any supplies (fuel, ammo, etc.). Once a unit is on the "field" it gets loaded with "supply" which increases the weight.

There are a few cargo/transport planes in game that are capable of very large loads, the largest is the AN-225 Cossack which may be purchased from Ukraine or Russia. The USA has the C-5 and the Boeing 747-LCF which have capacities of 1572 and 2220 respectively.

Now, there is a method in game for using a smaller capacity transport to move a unit that has a larger weight than the transport is capable of.. this is "split" unit.

Lets look at this in action

This units Technical Readout Card shows a weight if 2,398 tons.

Once deployed and loaded for combat. Now with its "Combat Load" it has a weight of 3,051 tons.

I am using a 747-LCF to move the unit, but it only has a cargo capacity of 2,220 tons. Oh no! What now, I cannot move it, or can I?

Image

Lets reselect the unit I want to move and choose "Split Unit".

Image

The single Tank Battalion is now two, and each only weighs 1,525 tons. I can now load them, one at a time, into the cargo plane and fly them to their destination.

Now that each "half" is at its final destination I can "Merge" them back into a complete fighting unit.

Basically, be aware of the Weight of a unit, verse its Combat Weight and even if you do not have enough cargo capacity you still have an option, so not all hope is lost. :)

SIDE NOTE: The merge function can also be used to create "oversized units".

But when the final destination is ennemy territory how do I find the time to merge units with all the ennemy ones attacking me ?

You can use them as separate units till such a time as you can merge them. I would not recommend that though. Your best bet would be to only use leg Infantry and Large transport planes, use as many as you need to. I normally use them in stacks of 7 for air assaults with some sort of Special Forces unit.

If you want to use Helo(s) I suggest the cheap MI-6 Hook. I use it almost exclusively in early game when I am not the USA. It can be purchased from Russia and maybe Ukraine, I forget. If memory serves 3 of them will carry a full stack (7 Brigades) of Special Forces. They are also great for resupply duty as they can land in remote places and not be subject to air interception/detection on the ground. I prefer them over Supply Trucks in most situations.

If you are very limited on the amount of air units you can build/have then you may want to consider not using them as transports. They will never have the capacities of Naval vessels and you must use air units in stacks to move most ground units other than Leg Inf types. In cases where you simply cannot have multiple air units to use as transports may be best to invest in Mechanized Infantry instead.

NOTE: Special Forces units with high Stealth rating should be set to STEALTH mode prior to dropping, this offers a few perks, one being if you drop on a city with Garrisons and other Ground units the SF will engage the Ground Units first, and NOT trigger the Garrisons. This way you are not fighting everything at once. You can also Helo in SF units to 2 or 3 Hex's from your target and walk them in while stealth'd. You can manually clear the "Star" formations of enemy units that the AI builds. Clear as many as you can, then withdraw back to choppers for resupply then send them in again. Most SF have a rating of 130 - 140 and it is difficult to detect them when they are in "Commando" mode.
