United Nations membership

With more regions available at once, who will you trade with? Who will you ignore? Will you trade for products, technologies, military designs or treaties? How much will you trade with your future enemies?

And you are much better off without it.

I find it a lot harder to sell stuff to the world market when not in the UN. Maybe that's just my imagination.

I like to turn up world volatility to almost the max, then play the role of Peacekeeper and take valuable chunks of land everywhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you still pay a UN Fee if you aren't in regardless?
I'm sure one of my saves when I was kicked out, I was still paying the UN Fee

Might have been imagining it, but I'll keep a look out if it happens again

What's UN membership good for? I haven't played out of my 1st game year so far, due to restarts as I learn more and more of the game. Israel pays $6M a day in membership fees, and I have only had direct dealings with them once and they were trying to sell me something. I'm not neccessarily going to just run amuck in the Middle East, but I'm just drooling over Syria's resources/production and am gonna have it even if I get kicked out of the UN. Considering how nearly useless the real world UN is *cough* darfur *cough*, I'd be curious to know if there's a legitimate reason for even caring about them ingame.

The only reason I have seen for the UN is for extremely poor countries. If you play one, and you have good UN standing they will give you free resources, food, petro, etc. It can help in the early stages of those type of games, (small/poor region).

I have always considered it a crutch for the ai also as it cannot build resource facilities like you or I.
