Any time I get allied and I get a mutual defense pact it seems that only I have to respect it, or rather only I have to suffer the spam that follows war declarations.

I'd like to suggest a setting that would determine how often would AI go to war due to alliances and stuff.

It would have two or three settings. One would be normal and other always, third can be high.
It would greatly help those who think that alliances and mutual defense pacts should count for something, especially considering that they are what got the world wars to the level they got to, in addition to making this game much more enjoyable.

Of course, the AI actually treats Mutual Defense similar to the way a human player does - it gets notified and it considers the situation, but it does not automatically declare war. Just the way a human player does with the Mutual Defense "Spam" message.

When Mutual Defense is part of things, the AI does give more consideration to also declaring war, but there are many other factors it will consider as well, and in some cases it will decide to declare war but go through a bit of a 'buildup' time first before actually declaring.

The game option you suggest could be possible, or could be tied to one of the other settings, but it would also mean that AI's would have to be made much more cautious about accepting Mutual Defense, knowing that they may be called upon to be forced to declare.

Sort of odd but I was about to edit in that about AI being more careful in the situation it's forced to declare war.

I don't mind it being more careful, but I do mind it being negligent of it's duties because the USA and Russia have no reason not to oblige declaring war on Poland, because they're stronger and they know it, and aren't at war (or that was the situation at that moment), and there are many more examples, as you do of course know.

If you wouldn't mind, could you explain what factors does the AI take in consideration before deciding to declare war or not?
And, if all fails, you could at least make the option that they are forced to agree or not, not to hold off until I win.

I don't have right at hand a list of everything the AI considers regarding a mutual defense request, but a few of them are:

- The preparedness of it's own military (how many units, how many deployed, efficiency levels, etc)
- Strength comparison to the potential new enemy
- Treasury and Resource stockpile considerations
- Location of potential enemy, whether they border each other, etc
- Civilian and diplomatic relations currently in place with the potential enemy
- Overall world opinion towards the potential enemy

And so on.

Though we are constantly tweaking the AI diplomacy elements, and working to improve them.

That's really cool. I didn't know that the AI considered those things.
